The woman in the white coat stood behind the open door, fully covered, her face hidden. Even so, the urgency in her posture was obvious.

Hayley caught a glimpse of her badge.

The same one who had registered them earlier.

“Let’s go.”

Hayley grabbed Winona’s hand and followed her.

As they moved, Hayley kept her mental ability spread out, covering a wide radius. All the cameras and sensors within range shattered one after another.

They turned corner after corner, passed through door after door, until finally they reached a door that

looked different from the rest.

The woman entered a long string of codes and swiped multiple cards, and the lock clicked open.

Cool air rushed in. Above them, the night sky stretched wide over the canyon, scattered with stars. Ahead, a dense forest spread out in the dark.

They were out.

Winona coughed hard, the sudden fresh air hitting her lungs after everything inside.

The woman immediately crouched in front of her. “Are you okay?”

She reached out, but Winona flinched back instinctively.

Still, the woman didn’t pull away. Her voice softened. “How did you end up in there? Where’s your dad?”

“He’s dead.”

“How did he die?”

“He was bitten by a zombie last year,” Winona said while blinking, her voice steady.

After everything she had been through, death no longer shook her. Even talking about her father didn’t stir anything in her.

Seeing how calm she was, the woman felt her chest tighten with a sharp, aching pain.

“How have you been surviving all this time?”

Winona looked at her, then glanced up at Hayley. “I just did. I was with my uncle before. He was going to sell me off as food, but she saved me.”

The woman froze. Then panic flashed across her face, followed by regret and fear. She pulled Winona into a tight hug.

“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…”

“Hey! Let go!” Winona struggled against her.

Hayley watched quietly. By now, she was certain that this woman was Winona’s mother.

“That’s enough,” Hayley said. “If you’re coming, come with us.”

The woman let go abruptly and pushed Winona back toward Hayley.

“No. You two need to go. Now.”

Behind them, footsteps echoed down the corridor. The alarm was getting louder.

The woman’s urgency spiked.

“Go! Get as far away from here as you can. Don’t ever come back. This place is more dangerous than you think. Everyone they bring in becomes a test subject for the virus. No one gets out. Don’t believe anything they told you. It’s all lies. Run!”

“What about you?” Hayley asked.

“I’ll be fine.” She shook her head quickly. “Just go. And take care of her for me.”
