Chapter 735

Hayley finished speaking and jumped.

She dove straight from the helicopter toward the wide river below.

Griffin followed right behind her. As soon as he jumped, he grabbed onto her leg.

Barnaby, Tyler, and the rest came after them, one by one, each grabbing onto the next, hands or legs locking them together.

As they reached the stretch of river, Hayley waved. Everyone pulled their parachutes open.

Splash!

Splash!

Seconds later, all of them landed safely near the middle of the river.

Back in the helicopter, the others saw all seven of them make it into the water without a problem, and their eyes lit up.

“Go, go, go! Follow them! Jump into the river!”

“Yeah, the river’s safer!”

“Fifty-nine seconds remaining. Fifty-eight seconds.”

“We’re out of time. Move!”

The countdown overhead kept dropping.

No one hesitated anymore. They all started jumping.

After hitting the water, Hayley and her group swam hard for shore. By the time they climbed out, more parachutes were dropping one after another above them.

The zombies that had been crowding the streets caught the scent of the living and surged toward the

river.

Hayley was among the first to reach land. She pulled Griffin up just as a shriveled, filthy female zombie came charging at her.

The thing looked like it had been rotting for the past four years. It wore tattered athletic shorts and a tank top. The exposed skin on its arms, stomach, and long legs was torn apart, the flesh dried and shrunk, wrinkled like old meat. Its whole body was riddled with decay.

“Raarh!”

It opened its mouth, a foul stench pouring out. What teeth it still had were crawling with pale maggots. The smell from its rotting insides was enough to make anyone gag.

It leapt down from the park railing along the riverbank, lunging straight at Hayley.

Shing!

Hayley pulled the knife Scott had given her from her inventory and slashed forward.

“Ms. Reid! Behind you!”

Tyler’s voice cut through the chaos.

Hayley turned and saw a massive wave of zombies rushing down the riverside path behind them. They came in all shapes. Some were missing arms, some missing legs.

Worse than their broken bodies were their faces. Dead, pale skin was stretched over blackened veins. Their cloudy gray eyes locked onto Hayley’s group with a hunger that felt almost alive.

They sprinted forward, arms swinging, legs dragging, all of them closing in.

“Run!”

Hayley grabbed Griffin and took off.

Behind her, Barnaby and the others had expected her to show off that overwhelming strength of hers.
