Chapter 736

Dark clouds pressed low over the sky. October winds whipped through Somervale, strong and restless. The wind rolled in from the sea, threading through the high-rises and kicking up piles of trash at every intersection.

A four-year-old newspaper lifted from the debris and slapped against the dusty window of an abandoned

car.

This city, frozen in death for four years, was loud again.

“Raargh!”

“Raargh!”

“Raargh!”

Hordes of zombies poured out from every direction: streets, apartment blocks, and residential zones.

Somervale had once been Henerland’s premier international city. Dense and sprawling, its footprint rivaled places like Aecraton, but its population had been 20 times larger.

Before the outbreak, more than 20 million people lived here. When everything fell apart, the entire city turned into a sea of death.

Not a single living person was left. Not one survivor.

Somervale belonged to the dead now.

Zombies flooded the streets like a rising tide. Every road, every corner, was packed with them.

“Raarh!”

A fashionably dressed female zombie burst out from the street corner, teetering on bright red high heels. Its claws, tipped with chipped red nail polish, flailed wildly as it shook its head and sprinted forward.

It was way too excited.

The sharp clack of its heels hit the pavement like a rapid drumbeat. It shot ahead of the others, blazing forward at a speed that left the rest of the horde behind, charging straight toward the group up ahead.

A speed-enhanced zombie.

The moment it spotted its prey just within reach, its mouth stretched open wide. Its head shook even more violently, excitement spilling over as thick, black sludge dripped from its rotting jaws.

“Raaaarh!”

Shing!

Hayley cut it down mid-lunge.

Without pausing, she kicked the body back, sending it crashing into the eight zombies rushing up behind

it

She scanned the streets that were filled with zombies. Her eyes locked onto the towering landmark building in the distance.

“That way!”

The virus had broken out on a weekday morning. Office buildings would’ve had the fewest people.

That was their best shot.

Hayley tightened her grip on Griffin and changed direction, sprinting toward the tower.

She vaulted over barriers, cut through patches of landscaping, and stuck to tight corners and blind spots where fewer zombies gathered.

Behind her, Tyler and Emerson kept pace. Both were speed-enhanced, while the others were running on sheer will. Willow was already falling behind; Emerson swung her up over his shoulder without slowing down and pushed forward.

They ran like their lives depended on it.

Behind them, the horde surged closer. One misstep, one second too slow, and they would be swallowed whole.

Hayley reached a sealed entrance.

“Griffin, open it!”

She shoved him forward.

“You got it.”

Griffin looked at the reinforced glass doors. A thin wire slipped into his palm.

Tyler caught up behind them, breathing hard. “Ms. Reid, we can’t get in?”

“Relax. With him here, there’s no door we can’t open.”

Griffin’s lips curled slightly at that.

“But they’re almost on us!” Tyler gasped. Garrick and Barnaby stumbled up right behind him.
