The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 738

Chapter 738

Hayley walked through the empty building, her footsteps echoing in the hollow space.

She was already thinking about where they should go next.

They were in the busiest stretch of Somervale, right along the Clearbrook River. Before everything fell apart, both sides of the river had been packed with famous attractions, massive shopping centers, high- end office towers, and foreign embassies.

Right now, she was standing inside one of those landmark buildings.

If they wanted to survive, they needed more than just a safe place. They needed a way out.

The Sovereign Academy would come back in three days to pick them up. Wherever they hid, it had to be somewhere they could actually leave from.

If they buried themselves underground, no one was getting them out. They needed somewhere secure

and accessible.

Hayley made her way up to the second floor and stepped toward a window, looking out over the river. Her eyes settled on a tower about 500 yards away.

The Somervale Financial Center.

At over 1,300 feet high, with 80 floors and a full rooftop helipad, it was the tallest building in Henerland.

“Boss, I know this area,” Tyler said, stepping forward. “I used to work around here.”

Hayley turned to him. “Then you know the safest way to get to that tower?”

Tyler thought for a second, then pointed diagonally ahead. “That’s Clearwater Residences, the most expensive complex in Somervale. Even before everything went down, half the units weren’t sold. Hardly anyone lived there. If we cut through that area, it’ll be the safest route.”

Hayley followed his gesture, her gaze landing on the cluster of buildings.

From where they stood, it was less than 100 yards away. From the far end of that complex to the Somervale Financial Center was maybe another 200 yards.

It was a solid path.

“Get ready. We move to Clearwater Residences before nightfall,” Hayley said.

At her words, everyone dropped where they stood, taking the chance to rest.

They still had 100 yards to cross. No one could afford to fall behind.

Hayley had made that clear. She wouldn’t save anyone who slowed them down. If they wanted to live, they had to keep up.

While they rested, Hayley searched for the best exit point.

Outside the building, zombies packed every direction. This area had been a hotspot. There had never been a shortage of people here.

Suddenly, a gunshot cracked through the air.

Bang!

Someone had already fired.

The shot came from across the Clearbrook River.

Hayley tilted her head slightly, looking toward the sound.

A lone figure was sprinting down a zombie-filled street. That shot had come from him.

He had taken down a zombie mid-lunge, a clean headshot.

But the noise drew more.

Zombies that had been chasing other survivors shifted, turning toward him instead. Within seconds, the entire street was filled with them.

The man running ahead had nowhere left to go. Zombies closed in from every direction, cutting off any chance of escape.

The moment the first one lunged at him, he was dragged down and swallowed by the swarm.

Hayley watched the spot where he fell. The mass of zombies churned like a swarm of ants over food, each one fighting to tear off its share.

Her gaze shifted across to the others still alive on the opposite side.

A few small groups that had been on the verge of getting surrounded caught a break after the gunshots drew some of the zombies away. With the pressure easing, they managed to slip into a nearby yard and
