The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 743

Chapter 743

“It’s you guys.”

Preston spoke at last.

He stared at Hayley with a twisted grin, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth, his eyes sharp

and feral.

Hayley met his gaze without a word, then turned and walked toward the floor to ceiling window behind

her.

She pulled back a corner of the blackout curtain.

Thud!

A bloody handprint slammed against the glass.

A zombie was pressed right up against the window, panting and snarling, its mouth wide open, saliva

smearing across the glass.

Rain poured down outside.

The zombie was soaked through, its body twitching and jerking against the window, like it couldn’t control itself. Its crooked teeth scraped against the glass, mixing with the rain, making a sharp, grating

sound that made people’s skin crawl.

Hayley watched it coldly, then shifted her gaze outward.

The building was surrounded.

In the heavy rain, about 80 zombies crowded near the main entrance. There weren’t as many outside their unit yet, but as she stood by the window, a few had already picked up on her presence and started drifting closer.

She pulled the curtain shut again and stepped back, gauging a safe distance in her mind.

They needed to stay toward the middle of the living room, farther back, or they would draw attention from

outside.

“There aren’t that many out there.”

Preston’s voice came from behind her

“When we came in, we saw a car blocking the security booth. We didn’t mess with it much. At most, 100 followed us in.”

Hayley turned to look at him.

Preston went on, “We’re all just trying to survive Might as well work together”

His eyes slid from her to the food in their hands, greedy and obvious.

Instant noodles.

His group had spent the whole day barely scraping by, fighting to stay alive. They only managed to grab

a few expired cans that might not even be safe to eat.

And these people had something like this.

Their luck was unreal.

“We’re not teaming up with you,” Tyler said.

“Yeah, no way we’re working with you,” Garrick, Barnaby, and Emerson added, stepping forward.

Hayley’s group had seven people, five men and two women.

They weren’t outnumbered.

Under normal circumstances, no one would pick a fight with them.

Preston’s side had been through a full day of running for their lives. They were down to 13, all of them exhausted. He looked at the group in front of him, still strong, still steady.

“You’d better think it through,” Preston said. “We’ve got more people. Letting you join us is doing you a

favor.”

“Give me a break. Throwing your own people to the wolves counts as a favor now?” Garrick shot back.

Preston’s expression darkened. He looked at Hayley.

“Last chance. You decide.”

Hayley gave him two words.

“Get out.”

She stepped forward and shoved over a large shoe rack, drawing a clear line between them

“All of you, stay on that side. Step over it, and I’ll kill you.”

Her eyes were cold and unyielding.

One of Preston’s men scoffed. “Damn it! Who do you think you’re threatening?”

He stepped forward, crossing the line

The next second, Hayley’s saber flashed from her back One clean strike, and his head hit the floor.
