Chapter 744
Hayley held her blade, still dripping with blood, and stared coldly at Preston.
Preston met her eyes and spoke slowly, each word deliberate.
“Everyone stays behind the cabinet. No one goes over there.”
Only after hearing that did Hayley lower her blade.
She glanced at the body on the floor, wiped the blood off her knife against it, then kicked the corpse ba toward Preston’s side before turning and walking away.
“Damn, she’s ruthless,” Preston muttered under his breath as he watched her go.
He turned and ordered someone to drag the body farther off.
The units in Clearwater Residences were huge. Even with Hayley forcing them to stay near the entryway there was still space for them to move around.
The body was dumped into a corner, and the group sat down on the floor.
After a full day of running for their lives, they were exhausted and starving.
Preston had them take out the food they had gathered.
There were ten cans total.
He kept two for himself. The other men each got one.
That left a single can for the four women to split.
And that was only because Hayley had killed one of them earlier. Otherwise, 13 people would’ve had to divide ten cans.
Jocelyn and the other three women took the small can, barely eight ounces. There wasn’t even enough for two bites each.
They split it carefully.
At that moment, one of the women, the one who had been running at the very back earlier spoke up
“You guys eat. I’m not hungry.”
She looked sick.
The rain outside had soaked her through Her clothes clung to her, her hall plastered against her scalp, dirty water still dripping down in heavy drops
She was shivering.
She curled up in the corner, hugging herself

No one thought much of it. Everyone looked rough. Everyone had been through hell.
What mattered was that she said she wasn’t eating.
That was enough to light something up in the others.
She shrank back, and the other three quickly divided her share without hesitation.
This was the apocalypse.
No one was going to give anything up for you.
If you didn’t take it, someone else would.
They didn’t spare her another glance. Each of them crouched off to the side, eating their pitiful portions.
Jocelyn got an extra bite of meat.
She chewed slowly, tasting the slightly spoiled canned meat. It crumbled into dry bits in her mouth, barely tasting like meat at all, just heavy artificial flavor.
Even so, it felt like a feast.
She ate slowly, licking the inside of the can again and again.
That was when she caught the smell drifting over from the other side.
Tyler and the others were eating in big mouthfuls, their noodles loaded with meatballs and greens. Their food looked so incredible that it was hard to look away from it.
And there was still a whole pot left.
Some of them were already full, setting their bowls down, while the pot still sat there, steaming.
“Give me some, too!”
Jocelyn shot to her feet and ran over.
The moment she moved, Hayley’s blade came out.
Jocelyn stopped short in front of them, her eyes fixed on Hayley
“I’m here to join you.”
Hayley blinked.
“You wanted me to join you before, right? I’m saying yes now”
Jocelyn straightened slightly, a strange hint of pride in her voice as she stepped forward again, trying to
move into their circle.
