This group was clearly stronger than Preston’s. More than 50 zombies were wiped out in under a minute, their abilities flashing in every direction. With the rest of the horde closing in behind them, they rushed into the building.
Preston and his group couldn’t see what was happening outside, but they could hear everything.
Suddenly, Preston shouted, “Quick! Open the door for them!”
Douglas and his people had just made it inside and were still taking in the layout when a voice called out from one of the apartments ahead.
“Get in here!”
Preston’s group cracked the door open just enough, bracing it against the snarling zombies outside as they signaled to the newcomers.
Seeing that, Douglas didn’t hesitate. “Everyone, move in there!”
He led the charge, unleashing every gift they had.
In an instant, all kinds of abilities filled the space. The usual elements were everywhere, along with rarer ones like lightning, ice, and mental attacks.
Working together, they wiped out the dozen or so zombies at the doorway, then rushed inside.
“Raarh!”
Clang!
Thud!
The noise outside grew louder as hundreds of zombies, drawn in by the commotion, surrounded the building.
Bang!
The door slammed shut again. Douglas and his group stumbled inside, breathing hard.
Preston recognized him immediately and called out. “So it’s you, Douglas!”

Chapter 750
Douglas.
Out of the three thousand candidates, he was a well-known name.
People said he was triple-Gifted. Lightning, water, and speed.
On top of that, he was outgoing and knew how to win people over. He had built up a strong following among the candidates.
Most people knew who he was.
When Preston recognized him, he greeted him warmly.
“Hey, Preston.” Douglas nodded.
He knew Preston, too.
Preston was also one of the more talked-about candidates on the island. Anyone with a bit of a
reputation tended to know each other, even if they had never actually worked together.
“Thanks for opening the door for us.”
“We’re all just trying to survive. Helping each other out is the least we can do.”
After thanking him, Douglas took a slow look around the room, quietly counting how many people were on Preston’s side.
Then his gaze shifted to the group in the living room.
Only then did he notice there were another about seven people there. The moment his eyes landed on Hayley, standing in the center, they lit up.
Damn. She was stunning.
In a world like this, women were already rare. A pretty girl like her was the first he had seen since everything fell apart.
She had bright eyes, clear skin, and not a trace of grime on her. She stood there in combat gear, clean and sharp, carrying herself with a calm confidence that set her apart.
Like a diamond in a pile of rubble.
She was completely out of place and impossible not to notice.
He couldn’t help but look again.
“Boss.”
A woman behind him spoke up, her tone edged with annoyance, snapping him out of it.

Douglas came back to himself, but his eyes still lingered on Hayley.
“That woman,” he said, “is she with your team? You’ve got some real pull if you managed to recruit someone like her.”
There was no hiding the envy in his voice.
To him, it was obvious. A woman like that had to be under the protection of a strong team. Otherwise,
how would she have made it this far?
Preston cleared his throat hard.
“She’s not with us,” he said quickly. “They’re a separate group.”
“A different team?” Douglas’s brows lifted in surprise.
He shifted his attention from Hayley to the others around her.
Aside from the man wearing the panda-style eyepatch, who was hard to read, no one else stood out.
None of them looked familiar.
“You people who just got here,” Hayley’s voice cut in.
She looked at the 15 or so newcomers in front of her.
“Same rules. Stay behind the cabinets. Don’t cross the line. If you do, you’re dead.”
She wasn’t the kind of person who slaughtered every survivor on sight. She was cautious, aware of the risks strangers brought, but not paranoid to the point of killing anyone she saw.
As long as they didn’t threaten her survival, she would let them live. That was part of why her league had grown so large, why so many people chose to follow her.
