The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 76

The mutant zombie let out a furious, ear piercing screech after missing its attack.

The sound was so sharp that it made everyone’s head throb. It felt like 1,000 needles stabbing their skulls.

A crushing sense of pressure radiated off the mutant zombie’s body.

Everyone who felt it froze in fear.

Damn it. It’s a level2 mutant zombie! Fall back!Hayley shouted at Leonard.

That finally snapped him out of his shock. The moment he heard her voice, he sprinted toward the fuel truck. Forget the fuel truck! We’re getting out of here!

Hayley knew she couldn’t take on something like a level2 mutant zombie. Even in her past life, those things were insanely strong.

For regular people, fighting one of them was about as far as you could possibly go.

Anything stronger than that had to be handled by the Giftedand not just any Gifted, but at least a level 2 or higher.

Hayley had only just awakened her gifts in this life. She was still a beginner, barely in control of her abilities, and she wasn’t about to take that thing headon.

Run first. Staying alive was the priority.

Leonard heard her yell, but he didn’t stop. Boss, start the engine! I’ll hook up the trailerwe can still make it!

He couldn’t stand the thought of going back emptyhanded. This was the fuel Hayley wanted, and he was determined to bring at least some of it back for her.

Hayley clenched her jaw, wanting to curse but holding it in.

That idiot didn’t even know she’d already siphoned off most of the gas.

She slammed her foot on the clutch and started f

The armored truck roared to life.

Boom!

Dust exploded behind them as the

switches across the dashboard.

2 mutant zombie lunged straight for Leonard.

He dropped into a roll, twisting his body midair as he yanked a gun from his back.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Three sharp gunshots cracked

through the air. Every shot hit the targetone right between the eyes.

But this thing wasn’t like the others. It didn’t even flinch.

Idiot! You have to blow its head apart, or it won’t die! Get in the damn truck!Hayley yelled.

Leonard didn’t hesitate this time. In a few quick strides, he sprinted toward the armored truck, which was already revving hard.

But the mutant seemed almost smartit predicted his move and pounced at him full speed.

Dive left!Hayley shouted.

Léonard obeyed instantly, throwing himself sideways.

The moment he hit the ground, the right side of the armored truck shifted, and a row of sharp steel spikes shop

out.

Whoosh!

They skewered the mutant right through the chest.

Taking the chance, Leonard rolled to the side and dove through the door Hayley had swung open for him.
