Chapter 770
The helicopter lifted off again
The noise drew the horde below.
“Raarh! Raarh!”
Zombies surged toward the building, snarling and howling, bodies pressing in from every direction.
The structure under Hayley’s feet was only about ten stories tall. Around it, rows of low-rise buildings packed in tight, mos them no higher than that, with barely any space between them.
Fairfield had grown on the back of chemical plants. The economy wasn’t bad, but the housing hadn’t kept up. Most of the m stayed in the hands of factory owners. The workers flooding in couldn’t afford homes nearby, and developers barely bother
with this area.
So the place was full of old, self-built apartments that were six or seven stories, stacked as high as they could legally go.
They were meant for workers passing through.
The building Hayley stood on was mixed-use. It had shops below and apartments above. The exterior walls were covered in faded ads about cheap tablets, prepaid phone plans, snacks, quick loans, and drain cleaner.
They were local ads, raw and unpolished.
Between them, tangled wires stretched across the walls, and metal poles jutted out with laundry hanging in the air.
From here, you could practically step onto the next building. The gaps were that tight.
Before everything fell apart, this place would’ve been perfect for rooftop running. Now, below them, the zombies were packed so tightly that there wasn’t a single clear spot to land.
At that moment, Hayley felt the building beneath her feet begin to tremble.
“Raarh! Raarh!”
Hundreds, maybe thousands, slammed into the base of the building.
The entire building shuddered as if it were caught in an earthquake beneath her feet.
A siege.
“Stay on me!” Hayley yelled.
She scanned the surroundings, then locked onto the neighboring rooftop, barely ten feet away.
In one smooth motion, she vaulted over the railing, grabbing onto a rusted billboard frame bolted to the side. Halt her body hung in the open air.
Like an impossibly agile leopard, she pushed off with one foot and cleared the roughly ten-foot gap between buildings, tady lightly on the opposite side.
Griffin stayed right on her heels. Once Hayley made the jump, he followed without hesitation
The moment they landed, the rooftop door of the building they had just left was blown open.
About five zombies burst through the metal door with guttural cries, staggering toward them..
These zombies were not quite the same as the ones Hayley had seen outside.
Their skin was not that sickly pale brown. It had a green tint, like they had been poisoned. On their corpse-lhe, greenish tices

pairs of gray-white eyes bulged grotesquely, the rims bloodshot, as if their eyeballs might drop out at any second.
“Raarh!”
Right in front of Hayley, a hanging bedsheet was knocked down, and a green-skinned zombie lunged at her, its jaws stretc wide, claws slashing forward as its head jerked wildly.
Shing!
A long blade appeared out of nowhere and came down hard toward the zombie’s head.
One strike, and the skull was split through. A faintly glowing crystal core dropped out.
The zombie’s brain matter burst apart like overripe curd, clumping as it spilled across the ground.
It was sticky, sloppy, and completely liquefied. It oozed out in thick, lumpy streams.
