Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!

A volley of flaming arrows tore through the air and plunged straight into the zombie horde, igniting a long streak of fire that split the mass apart and forced them back.

Hayley’s gaze snapped toward the source.

On the hillside beyond the tracks, a modified off-road SUV was charging forward. Several people leaned halfway out of the sunroof, bows drawn tight as they fired one arrow after another without pause.

The flames came from a girl in a black leather jacket with long dreadlocks.

Each arrow was made from sharpened bamboo, the tips wrapped in oil-soaked bundles that caught instantly, bursting into crackling fire the moment they hit the ground.

Hayley caught sight of it, made her decision, and grabbed Griffin’s wrist before climbing into the SUV.

The moment the door slammed shut, a low, animal-like growl rolled in from the thickening fog outside “Raarh! Raarh…!”

“You got lucky running into us,” the girl said. “Any later, and you’d be done.”

“June, knock it off,” one of the men beside her cut in.

He shared her features. They seemed to be siblings.

June Hodges just laughed, dimples showing. Her smile was so easy and bright that it felt almost out of place in a world like this.

“I’m June. What about you?”

“Hayley,” she said. “This is Griffin.”

“I’m Zach,” the man with water and metal abilities added. “June’s brother.”

“The name’s William,” the other guy said with a quick nod. “I’m friends with the siblings.”

Hayley acknowledged them with a glance before shifting her attention forward.
