Chapter 78

Leonard froze, staring through the windshield in disbelief.

He knew exactly what Hayley was about to do.

She was trying to lure that mutant zombie off the overpass!

It might actually work, but it would put her in serious danger.

His scalp tingled with panic. One wrong move, and she’d fall right along with it. Why was she risking her life like this?

She could’ve let him handle it. She could’ve just run.

But instead, she was putting herself in the most dangerous spot, just to buy them both a chance to survive.

Don’t do it!Leonard shouted, cranking open the window.

The moment he did, a wave of thick black smoke and scorching heat slammed into him.

A massive fireball surged forward, blasting across his line of sight.

Raaarhhh!”

Leonard’s pupils shrank as the flames tore past him, the temperature spiking so fast it felt as if the whole world was on fire. Everything ahead of him was flattened and scorched black.

The flame had wiped out everything. Hayley was gone.

Leonard’s chest dropped, hollow and cold.

Sure, he hadn’t known Hayley lone

protect her people.

and everyone kept saying she was trouble. But still, she’d risked her life to

Just when he felt the bottom fall out of his world, a slim figure suddenly leapt up from beneath the bridge.

Through the haze and heat, Leonard saw herHayley, alive.

And his heart started beating again.

Raarh!

Behind her, flames erupted once more, swirling up like a firestorm.

Boom!

Then, out of nowhere, a massive surge of water burst from Leonard’s hands, an uncontrollable wave that shot straight at the mutant zombie’s head.

It smashed right through the creature’s skull.

As Hayley landed, the burning, level2 mutant zombie behind her let out one last roar before crashing down off the overpass, slamming into the ground below.

This time, it didn’t get back up.

Hayley turned to watch as the monster fell for good. The air around her was still damp, raindrops pattering down from the mist that hung in the air.

+25 Bohus

She blinked in surprise, realizing Leonard was the one controlling the water.

Not bad.

For someone who had only just awakened his gift, that was one hell of a burst of power.

Hayley had been planning to jump back in and finish the thing off herself, but it turned out that Leonard already had it handled.

Nice work!she said, walking over and giving his shoulder a firm pat.

Leonard felt the weight of her hand and looked at Hayley, who was still alive and standing right there. For the first time, a faint smile cracked across his usually cold face.

He climbed out of the truck, and the two of them worked together to push it fully back onto the bridge.
