The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 809

Bottom line, Hayley needed to stay calm.

She snapped a photo of the email

Right then, she heard footsteps coming back from outside.

She instantly reset the email window, returned everything on the screen to how it was, and even adjusted the mouse with obsessive precision, making sure the cursor rested exactly where it had been before she shut the display off.

Only after everything matched perfectly did she move, slipping into position behind the door.

She had just hidden when the door swung open.

Harrison was back.

The moment he stepped inside, Hayley glided past him, slipping out in one smooth, silent burst.

Harrison paused. Something felt off behind him.

But when he turned, there was nothing there.

Ever cautious, he stopped and stepped back into the hallway, scanning the area. All he saw was an unremarkable security guard walking away down the corridor.

There was nothing suspicious.

His gaze brushed past Hayley without a second thought before he turned and went back into his office.

Still, he didn’t relax. He checked the room carefully.

Everything was exactly where it should be, including the mouse,

He powered on the screen. The cursor sat precisely in its usual/spot. Only then did he finally let his guard down.

As far as he could tell, no one had been inside.

Hayley left District Two.

She had stayed in there a long time, searching as thoroughly as she could for hidden passages or sealed rooms. She only gave up when her Ghost Mode gift was about to expire.

Just as she was about to leave District Two, the Ghost Mode effect vanished completely, and someone suddenly called out to her.

Hayley?

Hayley turned at the voice and saw a few familiar faces.

It was Garrick, Willow, and the others; the group she had once led through a swarm of zombies in Somervale, helping them

survive.

The last time she ran into them, Tyler had joined the Sovereign Research Institute and ended up flying helicopters for them. She hadn’t seen the rest since then.

She didn’t expect to run into them here.

really is you!Willow lit up the moment she recognized Hayley and jogged over.

Back when Hayley had been scaling walls and running for her life, she had saved Willow and her husband, Emerson

Willow had never forgotten that.

You guys work here?Hayley asked, looking them over.

Yeah!Willow nodded eagerly. Emerson’s in District Three. The rest of us got assigned here.

Hayley’s eyes sharpened. Have you seen anything like hidden rooms here? Detention areas, interrogation rooms?

They all shook their heads. No.

Hayley thought for a second, then asked, Can you keep an eye out for me? Find out the restricted zones in District Two?

No problem. We’ll ask around,Garrick said immediately.

Hayley felt a quiet sense of satisfaction. Saving them before hadn’t been a waste.

Just then, a few other guards walked over.

With her Ghost Mode gone, they could all see her now.
