The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 811

Getting caught redhanded trying to poach someone right in front of his boss, Hayley didn’t even flinch. She gave Scott a casual wave like nothing had happened.

Nope, no other questions. I’m heading out.

Stop.Scott’s voice came out slow and lazy.

She paused, turning back. What now?

He lifted a sheet of paper between his fingers. Funny. I just got a file on your aunt today. Came straight to find you as soon as I

saw it.

The moment she heard that, Hayley spun around and lunged for it.

Scott pulled his hand back effortlessly, holding it out of reach. He looked down at her, eyes glinting. What were you just saying about me? Ruthless, cold, calculating, petty, and selfish?

“No way!Hayley shot back instantly. You’ve always been generous and kind, upright and honorable. You’re a freaking gentleman!

A smile tugged at his eyes. Say something nicer. And what do you call me?

Big Scott!

Didn’t hear that.

Big Scott!

She raised her voice, loud and clear this time.

That did it. Scott’s smile broke wide, impossible to hide. Clearly pleased, he let go of the paper just enough for her to snatch it

away.

This just came in,he said. Headquarters is sending people over the day after tomorrow. They’re taking your aunt.

Hayley stared at the short document, reading every word over and over.

The day after tomorrow, at 10:30 a.m., headquarters would arrive to transfer Ruby.

She didn’t have much time.

She had to get Ruby out before they showed up.

Thanks.

Hayley gave him a quick wave, tucked the paper away, and bolted for the dorms without looking back.

She had a lot to prepare.

Scott watched her disappear into the distance, the faint smile still lingering on his lips.

Behind him, Sawyer spoke up. Bossif Captain Reid could stay like this with us, that’d be nice.

Like what?

Not enemies.Sawyer opened his hand, revealing the ten detox pills. If she were a friend instead, that wouldn’t be so bad.

Scott’s gaze fell on the pills. The easy smile on his face faded, inch by inch, until it was gone.

That’s probably not possible.

His usual expression settled back into place. He took the pills from Sawyer, tossed two back to him as a reward, then turned and walked off.

He and Hayley were never the same kind of person.

He wanted power. Absolute power.

If she hadn’t kept her guard up and let him walk free back then, he would’ve taken control of that massive league.

And he wouldn’t have done it gently.

There were things between them that could never be reconciled. On that land, there was no way he and Hayley could ever be

friends.

And here, they stood on opposite sides all over again.

If they could call each other friends at all, it would only be for these few short days. Just these days, out of a lifetime.

Hayley made it back to her room, then called Griffin over and gave him an assignment.

Over the next few days, under the excuse of inspecting the surveillance system, he was to take a team and tamper with every external camera, plant devices inside them and setting hidden explosives along the way 1

Griffin nodded without hesitation.

Hayley wanted to sneak back into District Two that same day using Ghost Mode and dig deeper, but the cooldown made that impossible.

She forced herself to stay put, pacing her room and thinking it through carefully.
