Chapter 826

“Aunt Ruby?”

Hayley’s eyes lit up when she saw Ruby open hers.

The next second, Ruby coughed up a mouthful of bright red blood. “Ugh!”

“Aunt Ruby!” Hayley dropped to Ruby’s side immediately, grabbing her wrist. Her skin was ice cold, like a corpse’s. “Aunt Ruby…

Just then, Alex came rushing over.

“Hayley, we just received a message from Ascendant Creed.”

He pulled up a recording and hit play.

“Ms. Reid, you’ve impressed us once again. To Ascendant Creed, you are now invaluable. Your aunt has been injected with a special compound. Without the antidote, she won’t last a week. We have no desire to harm you or anyone you care about. Join us. The great Ascendant Creed is where you belong, and you will become its true leader. You have my word.”

Hayley stood there, listening to the cold, emotionless voice, lofty like some distant god. Her chest rose and fell, anger simmering beneath the surface.

“Don’t listen to them.”

An old voice cut in.

An elderly man in a wheelchair approached, holding onto a leash.

“Woof, woof!” The dog spotted Hayley and immediately started wagging its tail, pulling the wheelchair toward her as fast as it

could.

It was Kurt, the one Hayley had taken by force before.

Kurt’s aged eyes lit up as he looked at her. The guarded look he once had was gone, replaced with something softer, almost

expectant.

“Don’t go to Ascendant Creed. I can save your aunt.”

Hayley snapped her gaze to him. “How?”

“At the place I used to guard, there are a few antidotes,” Kurt said as he rolled up beside Ruby. He lifted her arm and examined it carefully. “She has seven days. You need to bring them back within that time.”

Relief flashed across Hayley’s face, but it quickly turned into suspicion. “Why are you helping me?”

“Woof, woof, woof!” Kurt’s dog wagged its tail at her, spinning in eager little circles.

Kurt gaze dropped to the dog. “Guess my dog likes it here. I don’t want this place to fall apart, at least not so soon.”

Kurt had been here long enough.

Slowly, he realized something: Hayley had a whole pack of dogs. The moment he learned that, he knew she had tricked him.

She had never planned to hurt his dog. That threat before had just been a bluff.

After stewing over it for a while, he started noticing how happy his dog was here, running around and playing.

This place was nothing like where he came from.

Here, the old world still lived on. It was nothing like Ascendant Creed’s cold, advanced ideology.

People here were optimistic, alive. Even in the apocalypse, there was this stubborn, rising energy that refused to die out.

It was completely different from what he had expected.

Kurt found himself thinking… This place wasn’t bad. At the very least, as long as his dog was alive, he didn’t want to see it destroyed.
