Hayley watched the man and dog head off, then turned to Liam. “How’s he been living here?”

“Aside from not letting him leave the city, we didn’t treat him badly,” Liam said. “A while back, Robert brought your war dogs into town. They got along pretty well with his dog. Ever since then, Professor K has been taking his dog out a lot more.”

Hearing that, Hayley thought of the 16 dogs back home.

Something in her chest warmed a little. She hadn’t expected her dogs to come through for her like that.

“Holly, are you heading out again?” Liam asked.

“Yeah.” Hayley nodded.

She still had to make a trip to Fairfield.

“Oh, right. If you’re going to Fairfield, I can help you get in touch with Clark Base there,” Liam said.

“Clark Base?”

“Yeah. Do you remember June Hodges?”

Hayley paused when she heard the name. It took her three seconds to place it.

That small convoy she had run into in Fairfield before.

“I remember them.”

“Well, June reached out while you were gone. She said there’s a large base in Fairfield, called Clark Base. It has about 8,000 people. When they heard that we took over an entire city in Aecraton, they were shocked. They’ve been reaching out a lot lately, wanting to meet you. I can give them a heads-up so they can support you when you get there. What do you think?”

Hayley nodded. “Sounds good.”

This trip to Fairfield was going to be far more dangerous than the last.

All the zombies had been released. If she went in, she would have to carve her way through them.

And with the distance, she couldn’t bring too many people.

Too few, and it wasn’t worth it. Too many, and it wasn’t practical.

If a local base could back her up, that would help. They could use the extra hands.

She turned and picked Ruby up, heading back. Liam watched her, something like concern slowly surfacing in his eyes. 1

Milo was easygoing. He never really noticed how much Hayley carried on her shoulders. 1

She never asked anyone for help.

No matter how hard or dangerous things got, she handled it alone. Somewhere along the way, she had even forgotten that she was still just a girl.

She had fought her way through everything, step by step, through storms and blood and grit, teeth clenched the whole way.

But she didn’t have to be that strong.

Liam took a breath and stepped forward, summoning his courage. He reached out.
