Hayley couldn’t help but feel that Clark and Whitney really drew the short straw with Ben.
Hayley took a slow breath, looking at him. “So you’re saying you can give me a better life than your sister?”
“Of course. Every woman in this base envies her life. You’d be lucky.”
That did it.
Hayley stepped forward and slapped him hard enough to send him flying.
“Are you blind, or just stupid? Anyone with eyes can see I’m living better than her already! And you want me to lower myself and live your sister’s life? Does your brain connect straight to your gut? All that air moving through your head, and nothing else? No wonder you can’t see straight with all that crap filling your brain.”
Ben hit the ground hard after the slap sent him flying. He looked up furiously as Hayley walked toward him step by step, clutching his face. “You actually hit me?”
“So what if I did? Go cry to your sister if you’ve got the guts. You’re pathetic. Whitney must’ve had the worst luck having you as a brother. She feeds you, clothes you, cuts back on herself and her husband just to keep you afloat, and you still expect them to support your future wife, too? The worst part is that you’ve got zero self-awareness. With what you’ve got, you couldn’t even afford one of my shoes. Where do you get the confidence to act like a leech?”
Ben forced himself up, still holding his face, eyes burning with anger. “You shallow woman! Just you wait!”
He turned and stormed off.
Hayley stood there for a second. She had to admit that level of confidence was something new.
Right then, a group walked up to her.
“Hey, Hayley!”
“Hayley!”
She looked up at the familiar voices.
June, Zach, Fiona, and Spencer. The same group she had run into before.
“Oh, it’s you guys.” Hayley smiled when she saw them.
“Are you okay?” June asked.
“Better than ever.”.
“By the way… We just saw you hit Ben?”
“He had it coming.”
“My cousin’s never been easy to deal with. This could turn into a problem,” Fiona said, her voice edged with
concern.
Hayley looked at her. “He’s your cousin?”
“Yeah.” Fiona nodded quickly. “Ben’s my cousin. Whitney, too. My parents came to this base with them.”
Hayley nodded in understanding. “Got it. It’s fine.”

“Ben holds grudges, and Whitney spoils him like crazy,” June added, worried. “You hitting him like that… He’s definitely going to remember it.”
Hayley shrugged. “Let him. If he wants to come at me, he should check if he actually has the strength first.”
For one thing alone, this base depended on hers for supplies.
