Chapter 832
Hayley waved it off. “Not at all. Honestly, men like you are rare.”
Clark shook his head, a faint smile on his face.
“I’m nothing special. Whitney is. She wasn’t like this before. She used to be gentle. When she married/me, she even cut ties with her parents. I was stationed far away, and we barely saw each other a few times a year. She handled everything on her own. Even when she was pregnant, she went to her checkups alone. She never once complained.
“When the apocalypse hit, she was eight months along. Running for her life with that big belly… The baby didn’t make it. Her parents died trying to save her. I can’t even imagine what she went through back then. In the end, was just her and Ben. She must’ve felt completely alone.”
A few drinks in, the words kept coming. He poured it all out in one go.
Hayley listened, something clicking into place. She thought back to Whitney’s attitude earlier, and it suddenly made sense.
“It’s in the past now,” Hayley said. “Things will get better. You two can still try again.”
Clark shook his head right away. “When we lost the first one, it damaged her body. She can’t have kids anymore. She’s a good woman. If it weren’t for me, she wouldn’t have ended up like this. I’m the one who let her down.”
Hayley didn’t really know what to say to comfort him.
She didn’t have much experience with this kind of thing, and she wasn’t good at comforting people.
Before the silence stretched too long, Griffin spoke up from the side.
“Don’t beat yourself up. She chose you back then without hesitation, and she’s still choosing you now. If she blamed you, you’d know.”
Clark looked up at him.
Griffin grinned. “Want a few tips? I guarantee she’ll let you back in bed tonight. Captain Gorgeous, you look wiped. Go get some rest.”
Hayley looked at him, suspicious.
She stood up and left the rest of it to Griffin.
There was no point staying. She wasn’t getting anything useful out of it anyway. Might as well let him handle it.
The moment she stepped outside, she ran into a man in tall boots and a brand new down jacket.
“Ms. Reid.”
Hayley looked at Ben’s bright, overly eager smile. “What is it?”
“Things were rushed earlier. Let me properly introduce myself. I’m Ben Larson, captain of the Gifted squad here.”
“Cool.”
Hayley had a bit of time to spare now. She crossed her arms and looked Ben over as he stood there, full of himself.
“I might just be a squad captain, but everyone here knows how things really work. When I say something, no one

argues. Whatever I want, my sister makes sure I get it. My brother-in-law listens to her. So really, I’m the one in charge here.”
Hayley didn’t even know how to respond.
“I’ll be straight with you,” he went on. “I like you. Don’t go back. Stay here and marry me. I guarantee you’ll live better than my sister.”
Hayley was completely speechless.
For a second, she was reminded of Nathaniel. He had the same kind of blind confidence.
