Chapter 839

“It’s true, Ben,” Fiona said quickly. “Hayley’s ability is way stronger than Clark’s.”

“You’ve got no clue what you’re talking about!” Ben shot back immediately. “You’ve never seen how powerful his fire wall is. You see a little flame and start calling it the sun. None of you know anything. Wait till you see what he can really do, then come talk to me.”

Fiona opened her mouth, then gave up.

The rest of them fell silent too, exchanging looks.

Right then, a cry for help cut through the noise.

“Help!”

“Help!”

Up ahead on the tracks, a woman and her daughter came running toward them. Behind them, about 40 green, bulging-eyed zombies chased at full speed.

Their bodies shook violently as they ran, like severe tremors had taken over, heads jerking and limbs twitching, but their speed was terrifying.

The mother and daughter were clearly speed-enhanced. Even with evolved zombies closing in, they were barely keeping some distance.

“Look, survivors!” Ben’s eyes lit up. “We have to help them!”

“No!” June snapped. “We’re on a mission. Hayley told us to stay in the car. You’ll drag more zombies here!”

“What matters more, the mission or people’s lives?” Ben glared at her, voice rising. “A life is worth everything. Move!”

“We’re not going,” Zach said calmly, holding June back. “We’re here for Hayley.”

“You people…” Ben’s voice dropped, his confidence slipping. “You’re cold.”

He really did want to save them.

At a time like this, if he could bring back two survivors, that would be real credit.

Whitney and Clark would see him differently. He wouldn’t be the useless one living under their protection anymore.

But going alone…

Ben hesitated.

The screams got worse.

“Help!”

The girl, maybe 12 or 13, tripped beside the tracks. Her mother stopped to pull her up, but a zombie lunged from behind. They tumbled across the railroad ties, barely dodging it, then they scrambled back to their feet and ran again.

Everyone in the car could see it. Without help, they wouldn’t make it.

The door suddenly swung open, and Ben jumped out.

“Ben!”

“Ben!”

Everyone inside the car panicked.

They could ignore strangers, but Ben was Clark’s brother-in-law. If something happened to him, Clark would come looking for answers.

“What do we do?”

“If he gets hurt, Whitney’s going to come after us,” Fiona said, her voice tight.

Zach made the call. “Forget it. We help.”

As soon as he said it, the roof hatch popped open.

Zach and June fired flaming arrows into the swarm ahead. Spencer started the engine and drove straight toward the tracks.

They moved to back Ben up and save the two survivors.

“Raarh! Raarh!”
