The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 846

Chapter 846

A blast of heat surged forward

Ben felt it hit his face like a furnace. Even in the middle of November, the temperature seemed to jump several degrees in an

instant.

He stared at the wall of fire stretching across the sky, too stunned to say a word.

Clark was the strongest fighter in their base. The fire wall he could throw up was unmatched. Everyone looked up to him because

of it.

But compared to this… it was nothing.

Ben’s eyes locked onto the tall, lean figure standing at the center of the flames.

So this…was her real strength.

He couldn’t help but think back to yesterday, when Hayley had chewed him out. He thought she looked down on him.

Now, he realized the truth.

He didn’t have anything worth her looking up to.

“Like I said, Hayley’s on another level. See it now?” June sounded almost smug.

Ben’s face burned. Everything he had said earlier came rushing back, each word hitting him like a harsh wake-up call.

“Hayley! The path’s ready!” Zach shouted.

“Get in the vehicles!” Hayley yelled back, her fire-element gift still raging at full force.

At her command, Zach and the others broke into a run.

The green toxic fog had already spread to the tracks. They had ten seconds tops before it swallowed everything here.

Vroooom!

Spencer jumped into the driver’s seat and slammed the gas.

No one else dared get in yet. They held the makeshift path in place, eyes glued to the armored vehicle as it sped onto the narrow bridge they had built. Every heart climbed into their throat.

Ten seconds.

Nine.

Eight.

The vehicle was almost across.

“Raarh!”

A zombie burst up from the pit.

Its throat had been torn open into a gaping hole. Its green, rotting face twisted into something grotesque.

It launched upward like a fish leaping a barrier, smashing into the last plank. If it broke through, the vehicle would flip straight into the ditch, and all of them would be trapped here.

In that split second, Ben pushed his speed ability to the limit.

He didn’t hesitate. He lunged forward and threw himself onto the plank.

Chapter

Whoosh!

The modified vehicle roared over him at full speed.

Behind him, June and the others froze in shock.

Ben got lucky. The chassis sat just high enough. It skimmed right over his back.

He lived.

Crash!

Before anyone could breathe again, the zombie with the torn throat slammed through the board. Half its head popped up like something burrowing out of the ground, jaws snapping open right in front of Ben.

It was so close that Ben could see everything inside: rotting flesh, pits riddling its mouth, and even a single strand of hair jammed between its front teeth.

One end had slipped down its throat, the other stuck tight between its teeth. As it opened wider, the strand stretched taut, dragging up from deep in its gut, slowly pulling more of it out in a sick, stringy line.

“Raarh, raarh, raarh!”
