The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 845

Chapter 845

The creatures in front of Hayley’s group saw nothing but temptation. All they wanted was a bite of hot flesh, a gulp of sweet blood. If they got lucky and tore into something soft and fresh inside, the frenzy would drive them insane.

“Raarh!”

Faster. Faster! Hurry! The food was right there!

Shing!

Hayley swung her blade and took the first zombie’s head clean off.

Then came a blur of steel so fast that the eye couldn’t follow. The flashes of her blade stacked into something solid, like a wall made of knives.

Not a single zombie could break through the line she held.

Hayley alone held the line against thousands. With her standing there, everyone behind her felt a strange, steady calm.

Even Ben, scrambling in a panic, couldn’t help but look up at her.

At that moment, he stopped running his mouth about whether these were evolved zombies or not and stopped trying to downplay her strength. Even if they were just regular zombies, he had never seen anyone cut through them like this.

She was insanely strong.

Behind her, it was like a dead zone. Nothing got through.

Her strength alone felt like it could match an entire Gifted squad led by Clark.

“Move it!” Hayley shouted. “One minute left!”

The second her voice dropped, everyone pushed harder.

The green fog had already crept past the old station and was closing in fast. Worse, the zombies in front of Hayley were no longer something a blade alone could hold back.

They poured in nonstop, packed so tightly that it was almost suffocating to look at.

Their howls pounded through the air like war drums.

This wasn’t a few hundred or even a few thousand anymore. It was, tens of thousands.

Ben’s hands shook so badly that he could barely hold the board he was working with.

He hadn’t fought much out there; Whitney never let him.

Back in the early days, when the outbreak first hit, he had been brave. He awakened a speed-enhancement ability that actually came in handy. When Whitney was bleeding out, he carried her on his back and forced a way out through a swarm of zombies.

He even got their uncle’s whole family out with them.

He was the only man left in the family. Everyone depended on him. Because he was the only one, everything changed.

After Clark rescued them, and after it became clear Whitney could never have children again, she clung to him like he was the last thread of the family line.

She refused to ever let him go back out there.

What Ben hated most was hearing people say he lived under Whitney and Clark’s protection. He believed he had real strength. Otherwise, how could he have led everyone out back then?

So he came here to prove it.

Now, standing here, he realized that all that confidence he had was stuck four years in the past.

He had been protected for four years.

Now, he was nothing. The horde outside had grown into something he couldn’t even face head-on. Hayley had been right to call

him out.

Right then, the ground began to shake.

Ben looked up, fear flooding his chest.

Three giant zombies were charging straight at them.
