The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 850

Chapter 850

“The Sovereign Legion’s evolution serum?”

Hayley saw the vial Kurt had picked up. She snatched it out of his hand, her voice tight.

“We’ll talk about that later. Help my aunt first.”

Kurt didn’t argue. He dug through the pile of supplies and pulled out a few bottles.

Then, he paused.

He spotted a dog bed and a set of toys mixed in with everything else. A small smile crept onto his weathered face. He set them aside carefully before picking up two sealed vials.

“These are the ones.”

“Look carefully. Don’t try anything,” Hayley warned, her eyes locked on him. “If anything happens to my aunt, I’ll cook your dog.”

Kurt scoffed, completely unfazed. “You think I’d fall for that? You’ve got a ton of dogs. If anyone’s getting cooked, it’s me, not my dog.”

Hayley stared at him. “Then I’ll cook you.”

“Drop the act,” Kurt said, already working. “You’re worried I’ll tamper with it. If I wanted to hurt her, I wouldn’t have said a word in the first place. Would’ve been a lot easier.”

He drew the liquid into a clean syringe, mixing the two serums with steady hands.

“I said I’d help you. So I will.”

“You’d better make sure none of the stuff got swapped out by the Ascendant Creed,” Hayley added, still tense.

Kurt let out a sharp breath. “Question my work again, and you can do it yourself.”

Hayley went quiet. She stood there, watching every movement as Kurt injected the mixture into Ruby’s body.

Her chest tightened.

Hayley had to admit: she was nervous.

Anything involving Ruby stripped away her usual calm.

Ruby was the only family she had left in this world.

When she was little, her worthless father was never home. Her mother worked nonstop, taking care of her sick grandparents on top of everything else.

Hayley never cried or made trouble. Everyone praised her for being well-behaved.

But no one noticed she was lonely.

She still remembered one afternoon when she was three. She woke up from a nap and realized the house was empty. She cried, clutching her pillow, barefoot as she went from room to room, pushing open doors, searching for any adult.

After she checked every empty space, and fear was closing in on her, Ruby pushed open the front door and rushed in, scooping

her up into her arms.

From that day on, wherever Ruby went, she took her along.

Until the day Ruby eventually left that home.

Hayley couldn’t remember what she was doing when Ruby left. She only remembered that after that, she never took another nap again.

After her grandparents and her mother all passed away, the reason Hayley could tolerate her useless father’s family might have been simple. She was afraid of waking up one day to an empty house again, with no one beside her.

She had survived two lifetimes in the apocalypse, and thought she had long since grown used to being alone.
