The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 867

Chapter 867

Only then did Maisie finally stop talking.

She looked at Hayley, noticeably more at ease now. She had never imagined the leader of the Haylight League would be

someone like this.

Talking to Hayley felt easy. There was something about her, a sharp clarity that made people feel safe. Just standing near her made everything feel steady.

That night, after returning to her room, Maisie held onto the communicator tightly. For the first time since Josh left, she slep

soundly.

Wherever Hayley was, people slept better.

The next morning….

When Hayley woke up, Maisie had already gathered the team outside.

“Are all of them coming with us?”

“Yeah.” Maisie nodded. Behind her stood five fighters. “They’re the strongest we’ve got.”

Hayley glanced over them.

The five elemental gifts, plus enhanced speed and strength. All basic gifts, and the highest level among them was only level 3.

“No need. Just send one with me. The rest stay here.”

Hayley had no interest in bringing dead weight. They might be the best in Maisie’s eyes, but her, they would only slow things down.

At that level, they would just be extra bodies, wasting what little/oxygen was available underground. It was better to leave them

behind to defend the base in case another wave hit.

Maisie hesitated. “There are a lot of level 5 zombies down there,”

“That just makes them even more expendable,” Hayley replied, unbothered.

Maisie fell silent, not knowing how to respond. “Alright. Colin, you go with Ms. Reid.”

“Yes, Mrs. Willis!”

Colin Bates stepped forward. He was over six feet tall, a double Gifted with a fire-element gift and enhanced strength. His dark skin and sharp, focused eyes gave him a steady, disciplined presence.

Hayley took the communicator with the location markers from Maisie. Then she boarded the helicopter with her team and Colin, heading toward the military test site.

Once they were inside, Colin looked over the group with a reserved expression.

“Your gear’s impressive.”

“Yeah, it’s decent,” Derek replied, resting his rifle against his shoulder.

“But once we’re down there, guns won’t be of much use,” Colin added. “You should’ve brought more of our people. They’re all Gifted Down there, it’s mostly abilities and close combat,”

“Why would we bring more?” Derek scoffed. “With our boss here, we don’t need numbers. ”

Colin’s gaze shifted to the woman standing among them, the only one without a helmet

“Relax. With her around, nothing’s getting close,” sofneone added.

“Our boss is the real deal.”

“You pied the right people to call for help. You’re safe now.”
