Chapter 866
“What do you mean?” Hayley looked at Maisie
Maisie held the communicator with the blinking red light and slowly walked over to her
“I’m really worried about Josh. We’ve never been apart this long since we got together.”
Hayley raised a brow. “How long has it been?”
“Almost 15 years.”
Maisie let out a faint smile.
“We started dating back in high school. It was kind of a big deal back then. I was the top student in school, and he was at the ver bottom. He ranked dead last every year. But when he decided to pursue me, he worked like crazy. By the time we took our SAT, – he actually scored one point higher than me.”
Hayley’s eyes lit up slightly. “That’s impressive.”
“Yean. He told me back then that he’d handle all the storms in life so I could just be happy every day.”
Maisie let out a soft breath, her grip tightening around the communicator.
“We got into the same college, graduated together, and got married right after.
“He really kept every promise he made. After graduation, he started a business, and everything went smoothly. I didn’t even know what stress felt like. If I had a bad day at work, he’d tell me to quit and stay home. Whatever I wanted to do, he supported it. Whatever I wanted to eat or drink, no matter how busy he was, he’d remember.
“Everyone around me envied me for marrying someone like him.”
After listening, Hayley said, “You must be pretty amazing, too.”
Maisie laughed softly, the tension in her face finally easing a little.
“I just did what a decent wife should do. When he was studying, I tutored him. When he started his business, I borrowed 200 grand from my parents to support him. When his company struggled, I used all my family’s connections to help him find clients.
“After the apocalypse, I did everything I could not to hold him back. When he went out, I made sure the base was stable. Compared to what he’s done, it’s nothing.”
“No. You’re stronger than your husband in every way,” Hayley said, looking at her steadily.
“You had to be stronger to support him like that. Before the apocalypse, your background and abilities were already far beyond his. You gave him the funding and connections he needed. After the apocalypse, your management skills are just as sold. Even without him here, you’re keeping everything rusining smoothly.
“You’ve just been standing in the background this whole time, letting him take the spotlight. That’s why people overlook what you’re capable of.
“If you ask me, he’s the lucky one for marrying you. Anyone would be. If you ever che to stand on your own, you’d shine on your own just fine.”
Maisie fell silent after hearing that.
She had dreams once, plans for her own life. Somewhere along the way, after meeting Joshi, she had pushed all of that aside.
His background hadn’t been as strong sa hers. In many ways, he had started out behind her
Al sortie pentit, that stopped mattering. She chose to step back, quietly supporting him, helping hum grow into someone strong
