The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 892

Maisie watched as Josh carried Leah away in a rush.

In that moment, everything she believed in collapsed.

Josh loved Leah.

He loved her.

No matter how helpless he tried to act, no matter how well he dressed it up… Somewhere along the w he had already fallen for Leah, the one who had never measured up to her.

That was why, at a moment like this, he could leave without a second thought, carrying Leah in his arr

Maisie didn’t cry anymore. She just stood there, looking through a blur of tears as the man she loved most disappeared into the distance with another woman.

She couldn’t cry.

Or maybe it just didn’t matter anymore.

Tears were meant for someone who cared to see them. Otherwise, they were nothing but a joke.

Maisie had never been someone who allowed herself to become a joke. She had always been proud.

And yet, right now, her chest felt hollow, a dull ache spreading through it.

The most important thing in her life was gone.

Everything she had was gone.

“So, do you want to come with me?”

A clear voice sounded in her ear.

Ten minutes later…

Josh settled Leah in place and called over the base’s best doctor to treat her.

Finally, he got a moment to breathe.

After lighting a cigarette, he called one of his men over, his voice heavy with fatigue. “Where’s Maisie?”

He had already made up his mind.

He wanted both Maisie and Leah.

This was the apocalypse. There were no laws, no old rules to follow. As the base director, having both of them wasn’t a problem.

Maisie was reasonable. She would understand.

At least, that was what he told himself.

However, no one answered him.

“Where the hell is Maisie?” Josh snapped again, frowning at the awkward silence from his subordin

“Sh-she left with Haylight Base.”

“What?!” Josh shot to his feet and ran out of the room.

As he rushed outside, a helicopter passed overhead, heading far into the eastern sky.

“She also said… You won’t ever see her again.”

Something inside Josh shattered.

He stared at the helicopter and started running after it, chasing it across the ground all the way to the eastern wall.

But there was no way he could catch it. By the time he reached the highest point, the helicopter was already gone, nothing more than a fading black dot in the distance.

Josh stood there, stunned, watching it disappear.

A wave of realization hit him, followed by fear.

This was the apocalypse. He didn’t have a helicopter. He didn’t even have enough fuel to drive far enough to find Maisie.

Outside, it was nothing but zombies. An endless sea of them.

He would never see Maisie again.

If she left, then she was truly gone.

He had really lost Maisie, the wife he had loved for 15 years.

For the first time, panic set in completely.

“Maisie! Come back! I was wrong!”

On the other hand, Maisie didn’t shed another tear.

She sat quietly inside Hayley’s helicopter.

Colin sat beside her. He had come along, too. He couldn’t stand watching Leah step in so openly like that.

Sure, Josh was the base director of West Sea Base, the one with the final say. Without Maisie, however, that base wouldn’t function at all.

Plus, what Josh had done on the wall just now had completely lost people’s respect,

+10

He had chosen Leah over Maisie without hesitation and left Maisie to face everyone after his betray Honestly, that was a spineless move. A lot of people were disappointed in him.

Maisie was the recognized deputy base director. How could Leah even compare? No matter how you looked at it, he shouldn’t have left Maisie behind and carried Leah away.

The moment Maisie left, Colin followed.

Others had their thoughts as well. They weren’t familiar with Hayley, though, and it wasn’t enough for them to abandon their own base for another.

So they stayed.

Still, after this, Josh’s authority in the base had taken a hit.

“Maisie,” Colin said, “if you want to cry, just cry,”

Maisie shook her head. Her expression returned to its usual calm and steady composure.

“What’s there to cry about? My grandma used to tell me, if an apple goes bad, you cut off the rotten par What’s left is still a good apple.”

Hayley watched her, eyes lighting up.

She had always respected Maisie’s capability, but now, she admired this woman’s decisiveness even

more.

Letting go of 15 years wasn’t easy.

And yet, Maisie had the courage to cut away what was hurting her.

If she forgave Josh’s betrayal, her future would be nothing but quiet suffering. She would work herself to the bone in the base while enduring him and his mistress living right in front of her.

She didn’t deserve that kind of life.

If something was rotten, you cut it off early.

Life wasn’t guaranteed to go smoothly. Knowing when to stop the loss was what mattered.

“Exactly! And we’ve got plenty of good men in our league,” Hayley said with a grin. “Once you’re with us, take your pick. Whoever marries you will be lucky.”

Maisie let out a small breath, the tension in her face easing for the first time.
