The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 90

Chapter 90

Right then, the secondfloor tower of Hayley’s base expanded again, stretching halfway into the mountain behind the shelter.

Above it was a large retractable skylight that could open or close as needed.

In the center of the tower stood a massive control console, positioned right behind Hayley’s mounted crossbow.

Twentyfour compact military drones were lined up neatly across the open floor space.

They looked only slightly bigger than the regular ones sold in stores, but these were nothing like the commercial toys people used to film vacations.

These were real reconstrike combat drones, the kind that could destroy a battle tank in seconds.

If used in an invasion, just a few waves of these drones would be enough to make any airdefense unit lose its mind.

Because they were so small, they were incredibly hard to track, and shooting one down cost a fortune. The only reliable method was to use highend antiair missiles, but that was ridiculously expensive.

Each missile could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and firing one just to destroy a single drone? That was basically setting money on fire.

And that was assuming you could hit it with one shot.

Even with heavy antiair guns, if the drones were flying in a dense formation, most ground fire wouldn’t be able to intercept them all.

It’d be like using a sledgehammer to swat a fly, and you might still miss.

The most effective countermeasure was electronic interference, which could knock drones off their course or force them to land.

But these were systemissued drones, and no existing electronic jamming could touch them.

Once Hayley deployed her reconstrike drone network around her territory, it would form an airtight, hightech shield protecting her entire base.

She had 24 drones, each with an 8hour flight time, divided into 2 shifts. There were 2 drones patrolling each direction, giving her base 24hour surveillance coverage without a single blind spot.

Hayley grinned, absolutely thrilled with her new setup. This defense system was incredibledefinitely worth every single zombie she’d killed today.

Then, she noticed something flashing in the system interfaceanother reward waiting to be claimed.

She’d killed over 1,000 zombies and traded in over 1,000 crystal cores today, which also meant she qualified for another crystal core reward pack.

The system had notified her last time that she only needed 100 cores to unlock the second pack.

Hayley called Spade over, rubbing its big furry head until the dog looked totally dazed.

Summer barked jealously beside them, so Hayley scooped both dogs into her arms before opening the new reward pack.
