The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 907

Chapter 907

Mona took the food and gave the owner a quick smile. “Thanks.”

“What are you thanking me for? Without Ms. Reid, none of us would even be here. Long live Ms. Reid!”

That only made everyone laugh a little harder, the mood at the table loosening.

Right then, another figure stepped into the bar, and all of them instinctively got to their feet.

“Boss!”

Jim waved them down as he walked over, motioning for them to sit.

It was his team: Mona, Jullian, and Todd; the only squad Hayley had ever allowed to operate as a fixed unit.

Most of the time, Jim worked just like the rest of the operators. He led his small team through clean-up runs and missions that needed fewer people. Over the years, after going through one life-or-death situation after another, the bond between them had only grown tighter.

“Boss!”

“Boss!”

Todd, more than anyone, had changed.

Gone was the timid, tearful kid Hayley first met, replaced by someone solid and steady. His skin had darkened from the field, his build now broader and stronger. From behind, he almost looked like his older brother, Victor.

People said that a lot. That he was becoming just like Victor.

After Victor died, Todd had slowly grown into the person he admired most, someone who stood firm and didn’t break, someone who no longer cried.

“Ms. Reid’s orders are in,” Jim said as he reached them, his tone steady. “We’re staying. We hold the base.”

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then, their expressions sharpened all at once.

“Understood!”

“As long as the base stands, we stand. If it falls, we fall with it!”

“We’re with you to the end, Boss!”

Todd, Jullian, and Mona spoke together, voices firm without hesitation.

When Jim heard that, the tightness in his chest eased. A faint smile finally showed on his face.

He looked at them, and his thoughts drifted back to two years ago; when everything had nearly fallen apart, when mistrust and distance had almost torn thein into pieces. And yet, somehow, they had held on and made it through.

Over time, through every stumble and every fight, they had stayed side by side, and he had grown into someone who could lead them.

He finally learned that in a world like this, having people you could trust without question was something rare.

“No matter what happens tomorrow, tonight, we drink,” Jim said, lifting his glass. “No holding back.”

“Cheers!”

“Cheers!”

“Cheers!”

The glasses clinked together, the sound carrying across the quiet bar.

At another table, a man and a woman sat facing each other. Monica couldn’t help glancing toward the group from Haylight Base, something soft passing through her eyes as she watched them.

Just then, a drink was set in front of her.

Without even looking, she picked it up and took a sip. Before she could swallow, something solid touched her lips, and she instinctively pulled back and spat it into her hand.

A diamond ring.

“Monica,” the man across from her said, “when this is over, let’s have our wedding.”

Danny looked at her with quiet warmth.

It had been nearly two years since Monica brought everyone from Evergreen Base into Haylight League. While their lives had gradually stabilized, they had never found the time to get married.
