The Ending She Read (And the One He Rewrote) novel Chapter 15

"I..."

More than the answer itself, it was Jason's reaction that shocked Jane.

Did that mean he wasn't planning on it, and she'd guessed wrong?

Or...

"Jason, I..."

Meeting his cold gaze, Jane had a harsh realization. The man standing in front of her was no longer the boy who had always put her first.

He was the untouchable CEO of the elite circle.

Any one of the people in this room could walk outside and be revered as royalty.

But as long as Jason was here, they all bowed to him.

"I... I heard it from Luke."

Afraid to admit she'd been guessing, she threw Luke under the bus.

With so many people around, Jason couldn't possibly confront him right in front of her.

If he pressed the issue later, she'd just say she misheard.

She thought she had it all figured out.

But she forgot that Jason never played by the rules.

"Luke." Jason looked over at the card table, where Luke was beaming after a winning hand. "Did you tell them I was getting a divorce?"

"Man, no..."

It wasn't me.

The words were on the tip of his tongue when he caught Jane's pleading look.

Luke quickly pivoted. "Yeah, I said it."

Just thinking about Harriet pissed him off. Putting on a self-righteous face, Luke scoffed, "Honestly, with your status, what kind of woman can't you get? You might as well just divorce her early. After all..." Jane was already back.

Someone kicked him from under the table.

Looking up, he was met with Jason's murderously dark expression.

A chill ran down his spine. Luke looked sheepish, suddenly realizing he had crossed a massive line.

No matter how awful Harriet was, as long as they were married, she was still Jason's wife.

Who gave him the right to judge Mrs. Whitaker in front of a whole room of people?

"Sorry, man, I drank too much and opened my big mouth. Won't happen again!"

Luke immediately backed down.

Jane picked up a glass and handed it to Jason to smooth things over. "Come on, Jason, isn't this my welcome back party? Let it go, for my sake. Don't be mad at Luke."

Keith jumped in to defuse the tension. "Your turn. If you don't step in soon, Luke is gonna get his ass handed to him!"
