The Ending She Read (And the One He Rewrote) novel Chapter 5

Transit security arrived first.

Police sirens wailed shortly after.

Harriet clutched the recovered Seraphina tightly in her arms, tears streaming down her face.

Jason looked at Harriet, his gaze complex.

Then, his eyes shifted down to what she was holding.

His daughter, usually as pretty as a porcelain doll, now had her beautiful black bob chopped into a patchy, ragged mess. At first glance, she was practically unrecognizable.

The sight of her unconscious after being fed sleeping pills was even more heartbreaking.

Just a little bit more...

If they had been a minute later, that bus would have disappeared into the night, out of the Capital.

If that damn trafficker hadn't been an old lady but a young man, Jason's lockdown order would have tipped them off. The trafficker could have effortlessly grabbed his daughter and slipped out of the terminal in the ensuing chaos.

Where would the next stop have been?

If they couldn't get out of the Capital easily, what would he have done to his daughter?

Jason's palms went ice cold.

“Alright, stop crying. Let's get Seraphina to the hospital to get checked out first.”

Jason stepped forward, raising a hand to brush the tears from Harriet's cheek.

Amidst the rich, crisp scent of pine, the skin where his fingers grazed grew warm and flushed.

Harriet froze.

Seraphina was already in his arms.

Carrying his daughter in one arm, Jason wrapped the other around Harriet's shoulders, guiding her toward the Maybach parked a few steps away.

Behind them, a sharp glint flashed in Jane's eyes.

Had Harriet, this idiot of a Mrs. Whitaker, suddenly had an epiphany overnight?

Did she have some master strategist behind her?

Or... was she so utterly stupid that even God couldn't stand it anymore and decided to lend a hand?

The private hospital was completely serene late into the night.

The doctor gave Seraphina a thorough examination. Aside from having ingested a high dose of sleeping pills and having her hair chopped to bits, she had suffered no other injuries.

“Thank you, Dr. Lynn!”

After walking Dr. Lynn out, Jason returned to the hospital room. As soon as he pushed the door open, his footsteps faltered.

After a whole night of frantic running around, Harriet's face was covered in grime and her hair was a mess.
