Had she known the outcome, she never would have entertained the idea in the first place.
"It's good that you're back. You two can run your separate enterprises without interfering with each other. Killian won't have to keep his guard up around your side of the family anymore."
Leon gave a cold, detached hum of agreement.
"Oh, right," Eleanor suddenly remembered something, her eyes lighting up. "Have you found yourself a girlfriend these past few years?"
"Why do you ask?" Leon immediately went on the defensive.
"You silly boy. When you find a girl you like, bring her home to meet the family. You're not getting any younger..."
Leon practically bolted for the door.
"Yeah, yeah, sure. I'll let you know when I meet the right one."
Eleanor chased after him, shouting her final instructions. "Take my words to heart! I just want to see you settle down and start a family. Then I can finally die in peace..."
Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor, Killian sipped his coffee, watching the entire exchange. His expression remained unnervingly calm, betraying no emotion whatsoever.
Ever since he was a child, he had known that Eleanor's genuine, unconditional love was reserved solely for Leon.
Even though Killian was the handpicked heir of the Quincy empire and ostensibly commanded everyone's respect, he had never experienced that kind of warm, authentic family affection.
Withdrawing his gaze, Killian turned away coldly.
By the time Leon escaped Eleanor's clutches and arrived at the office, it was almost noon.
Jillian bumped into him in the hallway.
"Mr. Quincy, I didn't see you all morning."
"I had to make a quick trip home."
Jillian nodded without prying further.
Back at her cubicle, Jillian's thoughts drifted to Killian's ultimatum. Her heart felt heavy, her mind too chaotic to focus on her work.
Slam! A massive stack of files was dumped aggressively onto her desk. Beatrice Quigley strutted over arrogantly, towering over her.
"Organize these files, digitize them, and email them to me."
Jillian took a deep breath.
"And don't think your personal relationship with Mr. Langley gives you special privileges! I treat all new hires equally."
Jillian balled her hands into fists, letting out a frustrated laugh.
Beatrice really knew how to spin a narrative.
The implication was crystal clear: if Jillian refused, she was abusing her personal ties with the boss to get out of doing work.
Moreover, Jillian couldn't even accuse her of targeted harassment, because Beatrice had explicitly announced she treated everyone equally.
She had masterfully disguised her petty bullying as a noble crusade against nepotism, pretending to fight for the hardworking rank-and-file employees.
Leon happened to be walking by and stopped in his tracks as he watched the scene unfold.
"Jillian's in for it. Ms. Quigley is vicious."
"Can you blame her? Before Jillian showed up, Mr. Langley always took Ms. Quigley to those elite VIP business dinners. Now Jillian gets all those assignments. Of course Ms. Quigley is out for blood."
