Noticing this, Leon suggested, "Want to go for a walk?"

"Sure."

Jillian and Leon went downstairs. Leon stepped away for a brief moment and reappeared handing her a cold drink.

Jillian had been craving something icy to cool her fiery temper. She didn't stand on ceremony, simply unscrewed the cap and took a long swig.

"I have to say, seeing you hit someone just now was pretty surprising," Leon said.

Jillian thought her shrewish display had frightened him and quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, I overreacted."

"No, I'm not criticizing you. I think you did the right thing. That's exactly how you should handle deliberate provocation."

Leon wanted to mention that he had originally planned to step in and help her out, but seeing she could handle it on her own, he had backed off.

"But speaking of which, your reaction today is vastly different from my initial impression of you," Leon noted.

Jillian frowned in confusion.

"I used to think you had a very gentle, intellectual personality. Now I see you have a core of steel."

Jillian lowered her head, offering an awkward smile.

What core of steel? Sometimes she was so cowardly that she felt ashamed of herself.

Word of the incident reached Daniel shortly after. He tore into Beatrice in the company group chat, declaring he would deal with the matter once he returned from his business trip.

But Beatrice didn't wait for him to return; she submitted her resignation immediately.

Of course, none of this concerned Jillian. She only heard about it through office gossip.

Over the next few days, Jillian saw Killian every night she came home.

She was slightly puzzled. She had assumed Killian and Sylvia were living together, but now she was beginning to doubt that theory.

After all, Killian never considered her feelings. If he really was cohabitating with Sylvia, he had no reason to hide it from her.

One evening, Killian had Mrs. Zeller call her into the study.

"Did you hand in your resignation?" he asked, sitting behind his imposing desk.

"No."

"Get out!"

Jillian didn't hesitate. She opened the door and walked out.

Just as she left the study, her phone buzzed.

It was Mallory.

"There's a charity gala this weekend, themed around protecting polar bears. Come with me," Mallory said.

Jillian smiled. "What do you have to do with protecting polar bears?"

"You wouldn't understand. Charity is universal. Besides, for them, it's just a gimmick. I'm the only one taking it seriously. Just wait and see. I'm going to shine at that gala and use my personal charisma to make those rich snobs open their wallets."

"Alright," Jillian agreed without hesitation.

Hanging up, she went upstairs to find Connor. She saw him sitting at his desk, holding a little dinosaur in his left hand and a toy car in his right, smashing them together.

He was providing a rapid-fire soundtrack of sound effects with his mouth, acting out the battle of the century.

Jillian smiled. She walked in and called out softly, "What are you playing?"
