The evening's charity gala was massive, held at the luxurious Grand Sail Resort.
Jillian had never attended an event of this caliber before. Mallory dragged her around, chattering endlessly, explaining the ins and outs of the gala. Some of the charity was genuine, but a lot of it was just an elaborate PR stunt for certain individuals to buy a good reputation.
"Would you believe that some of these people donate money, only to have it funneled right back into their accounts through other channels?"
"Really?" Jillian asked.
"Absolutely."
Mallory was just about to dive into the dirty details when someone lightly tapped her on the back of the head.
She turned around. "Mr. Langley."
Daniel nodded at her. "Keep your voice down. The walls have ears."
Seeing the powerful socialites milling around them, Mallory realized Daniel was giving her a friendly warning. She dropped the exposé and changed the subject.
"Don't you have a date, Mr. Langley?"
"I invited someone, but she was stolen from me," Daniel replied.
Mallory looked at Jillian and gasped in realization.
"No wonder you were targeting me earlier! Turns out I'm the one who stole your date?"
Jillian quickly stepped in to explain, "It wasn't stealing. Mallory asked me first, and I had already promised her."
Mallory shrugged. "Mr. Langley, next time this happens, remember to strike first. You can't always be a step behind."
"Got it. I'll act faster next time. By the way, did you two eat before coming?"
Mallory shook her head, looking miserable. "No. This dress is from a few years ago, and I've gained a few pounds since then. I haven't had a sip of water since the afternoon just so I could squeeze into it."
Daniel clicked his tongue. "You're not walking the runway. Why torture yourself? Come on, there's food over there. I'll take you."
The charity event did provide food for the guests, but it was set up in a discreet corner, which was why Mallory and Jillian hadn't noticed it.
Since both of them were feeling quite hungry, they gladly followed Daniel.
Meanwhile, the main hall was filling up with guests.
"I think that's the daughter of the Xavier family. I heard they were childhood sweethearts."
"Wait, didn't I hear a rumor that Mr. Quincy was already married and had a son?"
"He definitely has a son, but I don't think he's married."
The guests came from various tiers of society, so the gossip floating around was a messy blend of truth and fiction.
The host clearly placed immense importance on Killian, staying by his side the entire time and speaking to him with utmost courtesy.
A short while later, Sienna and Natalie arrived. They, too, were dripping in extravagant jewelry.
Sylvia let go of Killian and walked over to them. "Aunt Sienna, Natalie."
Natalie excitedly grabbed Sylvia's hands. "Sylvia, you look so gorgeous today."
"You look beautiful too," Sylvia replied sweetly, though her eyes subtly scanned Natalie from head to toe.
Seeing that Natalie's clothes, while expensive, looked somewhat gaudy and that her overall aura paled in comparison to her own, a satisfied smirk touched the corners of Sylvia's lips.
