A flash of profound sorrow crossed Judith's eyes. After so many years, their very first encounter consisted of Silas instantly interrogating her, terrified that she had come to blackmail him.

Then again, she had experienced this man's cold-blooded cruelty firsthand a long time ago.

Judith turned her head, picked up her rag, and went back to scrubbing the floor.

Her silence only amplified Silas's anxiety. He leaned in closer and hissed, "How did you even get into a place like this? You don't belong here."

Judith ignored him.

"Why are you cleaning floors? Are you struggling financially? If you need money, you could have just contacted me."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. "How much do you want?"

It felt as if a knife had been violently plunged into Judith's chest, leaving her shivering with a bone-deep ache.

She never imagined this was how Silas saw her after everything.

Back when they first got together, she had been mesmerized by his youth, good looks, and artistic talent. What Silas had valued in her, however, was her blind devotion and endless self-sacrifice.

They were both dirt poor, but Silas had been accepted into an obscure art college and couldn't afford the tuition.

Judith had worked three grueling jobs just to put him through school. True to his word, Silas married her after graduation, but he remained utterly consumed by his dreams of high art, refusing to shoulder a single day of responsibility for his family.

They lived in absolute poverty, yet Judith never once pressured him to get a real job to support them.

It wasn't until they had a daughter and Judith couldn't bear the thought of her child suffering that she finally begged Silas to find proper employment.

"Listen to me. I'll give you a lump sum of money. Quit this hotel job and never show your face at an event like this again. You're a complete embarrassment."

"I earn my living with my own two hands! What exactly is embarrassing about that?" Judith finally snapped, raising her head to glare at him.

She received a modest pension—not much, but enough to sustain her and her mother.

Lately, her mother's health had improved significantly, and Judith, unable to sit idle at home, had taken a job at a nearby hotel.

The pay wasn't high, but the work was easy. She hadn't told anyone, not wanting her daughter to worry.

"Fine, fine, fine," Silas muttered hastily, terrified that someone would spot him lingering near a cleaning lady. He glanced around nervously and lowered his voice again. "If you need anything, you can contact me directly. But you are never to ambush me like this again."

Following his anxious gaze, Judith noticed him staring intently at a wealthy, elegant woman a short distance away.
