When he got home, Connor still felt a heavy tightness in his chest and couldn't shake the gloom.
He played video games in his room for a while, but ultimately couldn't suppress his thoughts. He got up and went to find Killian.
"What is it?" Killian paused his work and looked down at his son.
"Dad, I want to go see Mom tomorrow," Connor said with absolute seriousness.
Killian looked at him, his deep eyes dark and unreadable, betraying no emotion.
Assuming he was going to say no, Connor righteously defended himself. "You told me before that if I wanted to see Mom, I could ask you anytime. There's a kid in my class whose parents are divorced too. He lives with his mom but gets to visit his dad on weekends and holidays. I want to see Mom, too."
Killian quietly observed his son.
The boy was growing up, understanding more of the world, and learning how to actively fight for what he wanted.
He couldn't just brush him off with a few casual words.
He slowly nodded. "I keep my promises. But you need to think this through. You have to be sure your mom actually welcomes you there."
Hearing this, Connor slowly lowered his eyelashes.
The scene he had witnessed at the mall earlier involuntarily flashed through his mind. His mom smiling at that little girl, patiently taking pictures of her—the radiant tenderness on her face was something he hadn't seen on his mother in a very long time.
Sylvia had also told him that his mom had a new sister to keep her company now.
A thought uncontrollably bubbled up: Did his mom not like him anymore?
Killian saw right through his underlying insecurity. Unable to bear seeing him so stripped of safety at such a young age, he gently reassured him, "Connor, you have to remember that you are your mother's only child. No one can replace your spot in her heart. Your mom definitely loves you. But whether or not you can smoothly get in to see her depends on you taking the initiative to ask."
Connor nodded firmly, turned around, and ran back to his room. He lifted his smartwatch and sent a voice note to Jillian. "Mom, it's the weekend tomorrow. Can I come over to play?"
By the time Jillian saw the message, half an hour had already passed. She had been buried in urgent documents, but the moment she heard her son's voice, she dropped everything and replied, "Of course you can. You're always welcome."
After sending it, she checked her itinerary. She had a major project scheduled for tomorrow, but this was the first time since the divorce that her son had voluntarily asked to come to her place.
