"Okay," Stella replied softly, clutching the jar as she walked dejectedly back to her room.
Not long after, all the dishes were brought to the table, and the family sat around to eat.
Jillian stood up, served a bowl of rice for each of the kids, and placed them in front of them.
Connor immediately spotted the Glazed Eggplant on the table. His expression instantly darkened, and he silently lowered his head.
"What's wrong? Not to your liking?" Jillian immediately picked up on his mood.
"Mom, I hate eggplant. You've completely forgotten what I like," he said, his tone laced with faint resentment and grievance.
Hearing this, Jillian instantly shifted the entire plate of Glazed Eggplant over to Stella, gently explaining, "That was my oversight. Stella loves eggplant, so I just made a plate of it. If you don't like it, you don't have to eat it. Don't force yourself."
After saying that, she deliberately served Connor a bowl of hot soup and placed it right next to his hand. "Mom didn't forget what you like. You love tomato-flavored things, but you hate the actual chunks of tomato. Grandma spent all afternoon simmering this tomato soup and strained it completely clean. There isn't a single chunk of tomato in it. Try it."
Seeing this exclusive favoritism meant just for him, Connor's mood slowly improved.
During the meal, Jillian patiently peeled shrimp for Connor, placing the perfectly cleaned pieces directly into his bowl.
She turned to her daughter. "Do you want some, Stella?"
Stella obediently shook her head. "I'm okay, Mom. I can peel them myself."
With that, she picked up a shrimp, expertly peeled it clean, and offered it to Connor. "Do you want some, Connor?"
For some inexplicable reason, a competitive surge flared up in Connor. Feeling like he was losing face by being catered to by this little girl, he immediately pushed it away. "I don't need it. I know how to peel them myself."
He picked up a shrimp and began earnestly trying to peel it, mimicking her movements.
After dinner, Jillian took Connor on a tour of the house's various rooms.
