Natalie Quincy dialed Sienna's number relentlessly, calling time and time again until she finally persuaded her to visit her new place.
This massive four-thousand-square-foot penthouse was decorated with extreme extravagance, every inch screaming unapologetic wealth.
Sienna Sterling stood in the center of the living room. She was the one who had arranged for Natalie to live here, yet now, a storm of conflicting emotions brewed in her chest.
She sank slowly onto the plush sofa, her face haggard, her expression distant. "You called me dozens of times today. What is it?"
Natalie hurried over, her face crumbling into a picture of perfect misery. "Mom, why haven't you answered any of my calls these past few days? I couldn't reach you at all."
Sienna lifted her gaze.
It was obvious that Natalie had been up all night; her eyes were swollen and bloodshot.
But in the brief moment Natalie looked down, Sienna caught sight of the poorly wiped-off eyeshadow on her lids, and everything instantly clicked into place.
Those bloodshot eyes weren't from crying. They were the undeniable result of late-night partying and binge-drinking.
"Why were you so desperate to reach me?" Sienna's tone was incredibly flat. "You spend every day partying with your friends. Do you really need my company?"
Caught in her lie, Natalie choked on her words. A flash of guilt crossed her features, and she reached up to touch her cheek. "I was just so bored! Living in this huge place all by myself... it's lonely and scary. I had to invite some friends over to keep me company."
"Cut to the chase. What exactly do you want?" Sienna was utterly exhausted and had zero patience for games.
"Nothing! I just missed you. I wanted you to spend some time with me."
As she spoke, Natalie reached out, took Sienna's hand, and pressed it against her own cheek, whining and acting just like she did when she was a little girl.
But Sienna immediately pulled her hand back. Her voice was blunt and icy. "Do you want my company, or do you want me to foot your bills? What is it you really want, Natalie—me, or my money?"
Natalie's head snapped up, tears instantly welling in her eyes as if she had just been accused of a terrible crime. "Mom, how could you say that about me?"
Sienna turned her head, refusing to look at her.
Seeing Sienna's cold, detached demeanor, Natalie's eyes grew redder, and massive tears began rolling down her cheeks.
