Panic flared in Natalie's chest at the sudden shift in Sienna's tone. "Mom, what do you mean by that?"
"The millions of dollars in debt you racked up—I've already paid it off." Sienna looked at her, her gaze devoid of any emotion. "The jewelry, the cars, and the properties I've given you over the years are more than enough to keep you comfortable for the rest of your life. All I ask is that you reel in your temper, stop your reckless spending, and start living a grounded life."
"What did you just say?!"
Natalie shot up from the sofa. The heavy photo album slipped from her grasp, hitting the floor with a loud thud.
Dead silence swallowed the living room.
She stared at Sienna in absolute disbelief, her voice sharp and trembling. "Are you cutting ties with me? Are you abandoning me?"
Sienna gently shook her head.
She honestly didn't know if her love for Natalie over the years had been genuine anymore, but right now, she had zero energy left for this adopted daughter.
She owed her biological daughter far too much. Moving forward, she only wanted to do everything in her power to make amends to Jillian. There was no room left in her heart to indulge Natalie.
As far as this adopted daughter was concerned, Sienna knew she had fulfilled every obligation. Her conscience was clear.
"I'm not abandoning you," Sienna said, standing up, her expression serene. "I'm just saying you can't rely on me for everything anymore. I've given you what I should, and I've helped you where I could. I owe you nothing."
With that, she turned and headed for the door.
Natalie completely lost it, screaming frantically at her back, "You are abandoning me! Just because I'm adopted, you think you can toss me away the second I make a mistake! If I were your real daughter, you would never treat me like this!"
Every word felt like a serrated blade driving straight into Sienna's heart.
Sienna hesitated for a fraction of a second, but she didn't look back. She kept walking out the door.
As the elevator doors slowly slid shut, Natalie's hysterical sobbing echoed through the hallway, but Sienna's heart remained completely still.
At nine o'clock that night, Jillian Jarrett finished her overtime shift and walked out of the office building, laughing with her colleagues.
"Hey, hasn't that Maybach been parked out front for days?"
"Yeah, I've seen it every single time I clock out. Who do you think they're waiting for?"
