Even as his mother in name, she had never truly understood him.
But she had something important to say tonight, so she braced herself. "If you are planning to marry her, I urge you to think twice."
Killian raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. "Excuse me?"
"Your grandmother is traditional, and she has never liked Sylvia. You know this," Sienna said grimly. "What you might not know is that Sylvia's background is not entirely clean. She is an illegitimate child, born from an affair between her mother and a bodyguard. The Xavier family covered it up to save face, but to this day, they refuse to let her officially take the Xavier name."
Killian wasn't shocked. He had known bits and pieces of Sylvia's scandalous lineage, he simply hadn't cared.
But what did intrigue him was Sienna's sudden change of heart. She used to champion his relationship with Sylvia constantly, treating her like the ideal daughter-in-law. Now, she was vehemently opposed.
A faint hint of mockery touched his voice. "You used to be her biggest advocate. What caused the sudden change of heart?"
"I've simply seen clearly," Sienna explained earnestly. "Everyone in our circle knows about her background. No one cares if you just date her. But if you actually marry her, it's a massive slap in the face to the Xavier family. Your grandmother would never allow you to marry an illegitimate daughter."
"Understood," Killian replied flatly. His face remained an impassive mask, betraying neither anger nor agreement.
Sienna wanted to press the issue, but seeing that Killian had completely closed himself off to further conversation, she reluctantly gave up and left the study.
The room fell into absolute silence.
Killian set his papers down and leaned back in his leather chair, pinching the bridge of his nose. A derisive smirk played on his lips.
What exactly was Sienna thinking?
The fact that she believed he actually intended to marry Sylvia...
How amusing.
On the other side of town, Natalie was seething after being blocked from her newest number. Just as she was stewing in her anger, a knock sounded at the door.
Opening it, she found Sylvia standing there with several high-end shopping bags.
Natalie felt a surge of warmth and threw her arms around her. "Sylvia! You're the only one who still visits me. Everyone else abandoned me."
