Deep down, her place in his heart was no different from anyone else's.

She had foolishly believed she could change him, entirely unaware that a man like Killian would never change for anyone.

Killian settled into the back seat of his car. In the driver's seat, Nate carefully monitored his boss's expression through the rearview mirror.

He felt a knot of anxiety in his chest. When he went in to deliver the papers earlier, he had noticed the elaborate decorations and Sylvia's striking attire.

If his guess was right, the young heiress had just proposed.

And considering Killian had walked out so soon, did that mean he had rejected her?

"Drive," Killian ordered coldly.

Jolted back to reality, Nate hastily started the engine.

"Not a word to anyone about the summons," Killian added.

"Understood," Nate nodded vigorously.

Returning home that night, Killian headed straight to Connor's room. It was already ten-thirty, and the boy was fast asleep.

Killian sat on the edge of the bed, his large hand gently brushing against his son's forehead.

Connor looked peaceful in his sleep, his eyes closed, his long, neat eyelashes resting softly against his cheeks.

When he was younger, he looked exactly like his father—a spitting image.

But over the past few years, as the boy grew taller, the contours of his face were looking more and more like Jillian.

After sitting in the bedroom for a while, Killian stepped out and ran into Mrs. Zeller on the first floor.

She was busy prepping Connor's breakfast for the next morning.

"We have a chef for that. You don't need to do this," Killian said.

"I'm used to it," Mrs. Zeller chuckled warmly. "I remember you used to love my cooking when you were a kid. Who knew Connor would love it just as much? You two are definitely father and son—your tastes are exactly the same."

As she spoke, the faintest ghost of a smile touched Killian's icy features.

It seemed the memories of his childhood with her had surfaced.
