Sean had been anticipating a joyous family reunion, but the empty dining room felt utterly desolate. It was blatantly clear he was an unwelcome guest in his own home.

Guilt washed over him, leaving him looking thoroughly awkward.

"It's fine. We can do this whenever Killian is ready. I bought gifts for him, Connor, and my daughter-in-law."

Eleanor gave her son an exasperated look. "You've been gone so long you have no clue what's going on."

"What do you mean?" Sean asked, surprised.

"Forget it. It's nothing." Eleanor didn't have the energy to explain.

Killian had skipped a public wedding in favor of a secret marriage, which was why Sean hadn't bothered flying back for it.

After Killian hung up the phone, Sylvia looked at him in surprise. "What's wrong?"

"It's nothing," Killian shook his head.

Every morning, he slicked his hair back into a flawless, gelled style.

But it was late evening now. The hold was breaking down, and a few stray locks fell across his forehead, giving his usually cold, intimidating features a dangerously rugged and vulnerable edge.

Sylvia reached out softly, brushing the loose hair from his forehead. "Did you get into a fight with your family?"

"No. Sean is back," Killian said flatly.

Sylvia stiffened. She obviously knew the name, and she knew exactly how toxic Killian's relationship with his father was.
