Bash didn't have a permanent residence in the city. He basically lived in hotels, and currently had the entire top-floor penthouse suite booked for himself.

Before heading over, Jillian coordinated the details with him. Bash promised that his personal assistant would escort her the entire way, guaranteeing no paparazzi would spot her.

Jillian drove her car straight into the hotel's underground VIP garage and took the private elevator directly to the top floor.

When the doors chimed open, the entire corridor was empty. Bash's assistant was waiting for her and quickly ushered her into the lavish penthouse suite.

Stepping onto the impossibly thick carpet, Jillian felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.

She had been entirely too exhausted lately. The migraines were hitting her like clockwork every evening.

She mentally braced herself. She just needed to hold on a little longer. As soon as she made things clear, she could finally go home and crash.

The assistant led her into the main living area. Bash was dressed casually in a brightly colored designer hoodie, fitted jeans, and pristine white sneakers.

The second he saw her, his eyes practically lit up. He closed the distance in three long strides and immediately grabbed her hand. "Jillian, you've lost weight."

Jillian didn't know whether to laugh or be annoyed. Was this just the overwhelming enthusiasm of a younger guy?

She firmly pulled her hand out of his grip. "Of course I did. Dealing with a scandal like that would make anyone drop a few pounds."

Bash looked deeply apologetic. "I'm so sorry. I really wanted to explain everything to you in person, but my team confiscated my phone and locked down my social accounts. They absolutely refused to let me make a statement."

Jillian sighed. She understood how it worked. He was an A-list star; there were bound to be countless paparazzi and obsessive stalkers tracking his every move.

"Forget it. It's in the past."

She dug the velvet jewelry box out of her purse and held it out to him. When Bash opened it and saw The Serpent Ruby Brooch inside, the light in his eyes instantly died. He looked genuinely heartbroken. "What is this supposed to mean?"

"I told you on the phone. There is absolutely no chance for us to be together."
