But in the very next second, another brutal wave of pain crashed through her skull. She doubled over, clutching her forehead as if a power drill were violently boring into her brain from the inside out.

"Are you done faking it yet?" Killian sneered.

Jillian kept her eyes squeezed shut. She hadn't expected a single ounce of human empathy to come out of his mouth anyway.

Staggering blindly, she managed to catch herself against a massive marble pillar in the lobby. She waited agonizing seconds for the sharpest edge of the pain to dull before forcing herself upright. Without a single word to him, she started walking toward the exit.

Her car was parked in the underground garage. In her current state, driving home was a guaranteed death sentence.

She planned to hail a cab on the street and come back for her car tomorrow.

"I asked you a question. Are you deaf?" Killian demanded, trailing lazily behind her with his hands shoved deep into his pockets.

Jillian's head was throbbing, and her patience had entirely evaporated. She spun around and swung her heavy leather purse directly at Killian's face.

Killian casually raised his arm, blocking the strike as he took two steps back. He leveled her with a glare so cold it felt like he was flaying her alive.

"Yeah, I'm done faking. Everything I do is an act. Since you're so thoroughly convinced of that, why the hell do you care what I do?!"

Jillian roared at him, looking like a furious, cornered lioness.

Killian merely stared back, his expression completely unreadable.

A fresh spike of agony hit her. The lobby spun violently out of control, and her knees buckled. In a flash, Killian closed the distance, catching her firmly against his chest before hauling her upright to walk her out.

"Let go of me," she choked out.

She thrashed against him with everything she had, but his grip was ironclad. She couldn't break free.

Out of pure desperation, Jillian grabbed his forearm, buried her face against his skin, and bit down hard on his wrist.

Killian flinched, but he still refused to let her go.

"If you don't go to the hospital, what happens if you die on the side of the road?" he demanded.

"If I die on the side of the road, it still has absolutely nothing to do with you."

"Fine. Then you want Connor arranging your funeral?"
