A heavy silence suffocated the room. Jillian took a moment to survey her surroundings. It was an incredibly spacious private VIP suite, elegantly furnished with a modern lounge area and an en-suite bathroom. Staying here for a single night was undoubtedly costing a small fortune.

"Thank you for everything tonight. Let me know how much the medical bills were, and I'll wire you the money tomorrow." Jillian threw off the crisp hospital blankets and swung her legs over the edge of the bed.

"Did you know you have a Patent ductus arteriosus?"

Jillian froze.

Patent ductus arteriosus. Patent foramen ovale. She was intimately familiar with both terrifying medical terms, because Connor had been diagnosed with the exact same condition the day he was born.

His case had been extremely critical. He suffered from severe bradycardia, his heart rate failing to meet the absolute minimum threshold to sustain a newborn. Because of that, he spent his first month of life trapped inside a sterile incubator in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Back then, the pediatric cardiologist had reassured her that PDA and PFO were actually quite common in newborns, and that the openings would naturally seal themselves as the baby grew.

Connor's heart had eventually healed on its own. But Jillian had lived her entire adult life with absolutely no idea that she possessed an unclosed artery in her own heart.

"No. I didn't know."

Whenever she went in for her routine corporate physicals, her EKGs always came back perfectly normal. She had spent thirty years believing her heart was completely healthy.

"The cardiologist said your chronic migraines are a direct symptom of the unclosed artery," Killian stated flatly.

Jillian nodded slowly. "Thank you."

She figured that while she was unconscious, Killian had taken total control of her medical care. He must have arranged the specialists and communicated directly with the doctors to figure this out.

If she had driven herself to the hospital, she never would have connected her migraines to a congenital heart defect. She wouldn't have even thought to ask for an echocardiogram.

Looking at it objectively, Killian had been incredibly thorough and responsible tonight.

"How do you live this long without knowing the first thing about your own body? Are you an overgrown infant?" Killian sneered.

The tiny sliver of gratitude that had just bloomed in Jillian's chest instantly incinerated into ash.

She knew she suffered from chronic headaches, but because they were sporadic and accompanied by occasional bouts of insomnia, she had always just chalked them up to severe stress and burnout. She had never had a reason to dig deeper.

"You don't need to worry about me, Mr. Quincy," she fired back.

"You really are ungrateful, aren't you?" Killian scoffed.
