Jillian smiled, nodding as she took the seat beside him.
"Mom, why are you here? Are you moving back in with us?"
"No, sweetheart. I just stayed over last night," Jillian explained gently.
"Are you leaving today? Will you be here when I get back from school?"
Jillian avoided her son's hopeful gaze. "If you want to see me, how about I come pick you up this weekend?"
Connor's eyes dimmed, visibly disappointed.
"Come on, let's eat breakfast together." She pulled him closer, settling him in his chair.
The two of them shared a warm, quiet meal. Afterward, Mrs. Lewis and the bodyguard escorted Connor to the car for school.
Only the two of them remained at the dining table.
"Don't you have to go to work?" Jillian asked.
"I manage my own schedule," Killian replied coolly.
"Right. I'll go pack up and head out then." She stood and walked toward the guest room.
The morning sun streamed through the windows, bathing her in its bright glow. The intense light made the pale pink silk of her pajamas almost translucent.
She had bought that set when she was at her heaviest. Now that she had lost so much weight, the fabric hung loosely over her frame.
The sunlight illuminated the sheer material, outlining her slender, graceful limbs and highlighting the faint silhouette of her lingerie beneath the hazy glow.
Killian swallowed the last of his milk, grabbed a napkin to dab his mouth, and forced his gaze away.
"I booked an appointment with a top cardiologist for you yesterday. If you leave today, I'll cancel it."
Jillian turned back around. "That's fine. I can make my own appointment."
"You can't. Dr. Zimmerman is eighty years old and retired years ago. He doesn't accept appointments from anyone."
"But you can?" she challenged.
"I certainly can." A wicked smirk played on Killian's lips.
