The moment she left, Mrs. Lewis called Killian.

On the other end of the line, Killian's voice was completely flat. "Let her."

"Sir, Mrs. Quincy looked terrible when she left today. She seemed genuinely furious. I'm worried that if she leaves this time, she might never come back," Mrs. Lewis said cautiously.

A long silence stretched over the line, completely devoid of sound.

Panic crept into Mrs. Lewis's chest, and she quickly apologized. "I'm sorry, sir. I spoke out of turn. I overstepped."

"It's fine."

Killian dropped those two words coldly and hung up.

When Jillian arrived back at her own home, Judith Jarrett and Lydia Lowell were both surprised.

Judith hurried over. "Why did you come back so suddenly? How did your talk with Killian go?"

Pushing down the heaviness in her chest, Jillian didn't want her mother to worry, so she casually lied. "We didn't talk. I just decided to come back."

Judith sighed and began to ramble. "Honestly, I've been watching things closely lately. Killian seems cold and has a terrible temper, acting like everyone owes him something. But when push comes to shove, he doesn't just abandon you. At the very least, he's far better than those men who just wash their hands of any responsibility. I'm not telling you to reconcile with him, I just think that for the sake of the child, you two should have a real conversation. If you can part amicably, everyone keeps their dignity..."

Jillian felt a headache coming on.

She had thought the exact same thing.

But Killian's mind was an incomprehensible maze. It was impossible to predict his next move using basic logic.

Unable to make sense of it, Jillian decided to stop dwelling on it. She took out her phone and contacted the executive of the tech company she intended to acquire.

To her surprise, the executive's attitude had taken a complete one-eighty. He was no longer enthusiastic and earnest; instead, his tone was entirely dismissive.

Jillian had originally scheduled an in-person meeting to finalize the details of retaining the team and structuring the company's future. Now, the executive merely brushed her off, claiming he was too busy, and hastily ended the call.

The drastic shift in attitude over just a few days gave Jillian a pretty clear idea of what had happened.
