"I don't care about the gossip in your little circle," Jillian cut him off sharply. "But I can tell you right now, Killian and Sylvia were nothing more than casual friends in college. There was absolutely nothing romantic between them."
"Oh?" Sean shook his head, clearly unconvinced. "What makes you so sure? Are you saying my personal investigation is wrong?"
"I don't need an investigation." Jillian's eyes were calm. "I knew them both in college. I saw it clearer than anyone."
Jillian knew better than anyone what having a crush looked like. In college, the way Killian looked at Sylvia was open, distant, and completely devoid of emotion.
When she had first asked Sylvia to introduce her to Killian, Sylvia's reaction had been exactly that of a normal friend.
So when she later heard that Killian and Sylvia were together, she found it utterly absurd.
She had even tried to rationalize it to herself, assuming that maybe they hadn't had feelings for each other back then, but reconnected years later and slowly fell in love.
"You're just lying to yourself," Sean scoffed dismissively.
Jillian didn't bother wasting another word. She stood up and walked straight toward the backstage area.
In the dressing room, Stella was obediently waiting for the rest of the contestants to finish.
Seeing her mother approach, she instantly beamed. "Mom, did I skate well?"
"You were amazing. You've improved so much." Jillian gently cupped her daughter's face, pushing down all the lingering frustration from her conversation.
"I thought you would come find me the second I finished," Stella mumbled softly.
Jillian just smiled, offering no explanation.
