"I heard you got divorced?"
When Jillian returned to her place that night, she was preparing to wash up and go straight to bed when she received a message from Gibson.
She felt genuinely surprised. It had been so long since she had contacted Gibson.
She had only added him on social media back then because he was her attending psychiatrist. After she changed doctors, they hadn't kept in touch. She had only kept him on her contact list out of politeness.
Jillian thought about it and realized Gibson must be fishing for information on behalf of his sister.
He could have just asked Killian directly, yet he insisted on confirming it through her.
It seemed his entire family was desperately waiting for Killian to finalize the divorce.
Jillian locked her phone without replying and walked into the bathroom.
Gibson sent another text: "Congratulations."
After her shower, Jillian cast a casual glance at the screen and still didn't reply.
With school on break, Killian and Connor had been staying at The Quincy Manor for the past few days.
It was late autumn. While The Xavier Family estate was lush with vegetation, the courtyard here appeared desolate and lonely in contrast.
Late into the night, Killian was still standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the tea room, staring out at a withered tree.
Sienna happened to walk by, pushed the door open, and gently urged, "Go get some rest. What are you still doing in here this late?"
Sienna turned her head and noticed the tea in his cup had gone completely cold. He had clearly been alone in this room for a long time.
Ever since Killian had booked the divorce appointment and gone out partying with his friends that night, he had barely left the house over the next few days.
Sienna couldn't help but ask, "Are you upset because of the divorce?"
Killian stared at his own reflection in the windowpane, meeting those dark, deep eyes. "Don't be self-righteous. You think I'd care about something like this?"
Sienna awkwardly clenched her fingers. His words were incredibly harsh, but coming from Killian, it wasn't at all surprising. Perhaps she really was overthinking it. "I'm sorry. I just feel like I dragged Jillian down."
"You certainly should apologize, but telling me is useless. I don't care."
"I want to find an opportunity to make it up to her."
"That's between the two of you. Besides, do you really think she needs that right now?"
Sienna had nothing to say to that.
Jillian was beautiful and successful in her career now; she truly didn't need her so-called biological mother anymore. If anything, Sienna's presence would only bring her trouble.
Not knowing what else to say and feeling a knot of melancholy in her chest, Sienna quietly left the tea room.
The weather was slightly better the next day. Connor was playing in the garden, and Killian listened to his son's cheerful laughter before waving him over once he had played enough.
Connor ran over. "Dad, should I go to Mom's place now?"
"Do you want to?"
Connor nodded.
"Alright, I'll send you over in a few days. But there's something Dad needs to tell you right now."
Killian kept his tone even. "Your mom and I are getting a divorce. I'll have custody of you. You're not a little kid anymore, so you understand what I'm saying, right?"
