Sylvia Xavier linked her arm through Killian Quincy's as they slid into the car.
"Connor starts school on Monday. Are you really going to let him spend the whole day with Jillian? I thought you'd want him to stay with you," Sylvia asked.
Killian looked down, flipping through a financial magazine.
"She is his mother, after all."
That single sentence was a sharp reminder to Sylvia of the unbreakable blood tie between Jillian and Connor.
Sylvia smiled, suddenly clinging tighter to his arm. She leaned in and pressed a kiss to his cheek.
Then, she looked up at him with a shy expression.
"What is it?" Killian asked.
"Nothing. I just thought about you looking at another woman's body earlier, and it made me uncomfortable."
Killian casually turned the page to an advertisement in the middle of the magazine.
It was a car ad aimed at high-end business elites, a limited global pre-order model.
"Do you like it?" he asked.
The vehicle in the ad was broad, blending the rugged traits of a Nightshade SUV with a sleek, black, streamlined body.
It was executive and high-end, yet possessed a wild edge. The target audience was clearly successful men.
Sylvia nodded emphatically. "I love this kind of manly car."
"Manly car?"
"Yeah. It's wild and challenging. Driving it feels like tearing across the African savanna with cheetahs and lions by your side. Those brightly colored, compact women's cars could never earn my money. They're boring to drive."
Sylvia shrugged.
"If you like it, it's yours," Killian smiled.

That evening, Judith Jarrett had to go look after Lydia Lowell, so Jillian called her a cab and sent her home.
After dinner, she called Connor.
Over the past while, Connor had accepted the reality that his mother was no longer living at home.
He was still very happy to receive her call.
Jillian mentioned that she wanted him to come over to her place tomorrow and spend the entire day with her.
Connor hesitated. "Mom, of course I want to keep you company, but will Dad agree?"
"By the way, Mom has a surprise for you."
Connor's interest was immediately piqued. "What surprise? Is it the toy I wanted?"
Jillian shook her head, denying it.
"It's a little sister."
Jillian already had it all planned out. She would have Connor come over tomorrow and introduce him to Stella.
She would cook for both kids and play games with them.
That way, Connor would have a playmate, and Stella could interact more with children her own age.
"A sister?" Connor frowned, completely uninterested.
He didn't even like playing with the girls in his class, let alone a sister.
But he didn't want to disappoint his mother.
"Alright then."
Jillian could hear that Connor's tone wasn't as excited as she had hoped. She felt a twinge of disappointment but brushed it off.
