The thought of spending an entire day with her son the next day kept Jillian in high spirits.

She got up bright and early to make Connor's favorite Velvet Crumb Cakes and prepared a whole table of dishes.

Around ten o'clock.

Jillian called him. "Have you left yet?"

"Mom, I'm just getting in the car. Wait for me, I'll be there soon."

Jillian heard the sound of the car door shutting over the phone. She reminded him to be safe on the road and hung up.

Just as Connor settled into the backseat, Sylvia's call came through to Killian's phone.

"Haven't left yet? I thought you would have dropped Con off by now."

Her voice drifted through the speaker.

"Sylvia!" Connor cheered excitedly from the back.

"Con!" Sylvia raised her voice cheerfully. "I was originally going to introduce you to an amazing artist today, but spending time with your mom is more important. I'll take you to meet him another day."

Connor was instantly intrigued. "Which artist?"

"Silas Xavier. I remember you went to his gallery exhibition before."

"Really? You know him?"

Sylvia giggled through the phone.

"Not just know him, we're very close."

Connor's eyes lit up, practically sparking with excitement.

"Dad..."

Killian looked at his son through the rearview mirror. "What, tempted?"

Connor nodded emphatically.

"Your choice," Killian said.

"Sylvia, wait for me. I'll call Mom. I'm not going to her place today."

Sylvia's voice sounded hesitant. "Is that a good idea? Won't your mom be upset if she finds out?"

"No. Mom has always supported my painting. If I can meet Professor Xavier, she'll definitely be happy for me."

"Mom does support you, but today..."

"As long as you support me, that's enough. Bye Mom, I'll see you next week, mwah!" He kissed his smartwatch and hung up.

Jillian rested her forehead in her hand, watching the screen go dark, and closed her eyes in bitter disappointment.

She never imagined the day would turn out like this.

Time ticked by slowly, and she felt completely drained of energy to do anything.

Suddenly, Stella appeared in the doorway. Her large, dark eyes were bright as she stared at Jillian without a single sound.

After a long moment, Stella pointed a tiny finger toward the kitchen.

Jillian snapped out of her daze. The soup was still simmering on the gas stove!

She sprinted into the kitchen. The soup had boiled over and extinguished the flame.

The pungent smell of natural gas filled the room.

"Sylvia, my mom said yes! I'm coming to find you right now."

Connor sent the voice message in a burst of excitement.
