"You're not going to keep your mom company?" Sylvia's voice was laced with pleasant surprise.
"Yeah, I think meeting Professor Xavier is more important. Do you know what he likes? I want to get him a gift."
Sylvia giggled softly.
"There's no need for gifts, we're all family here. Don't worry, even if you show up empty-handed, he'll adore you."
"Really?" Connor tightened his small fists in nervous excitement.
"Of course."
"Thank you, Sylvia. You're the best."
"Oh, right, Con. Since you aren't spending time with your mom this time, make sure you explain it to her clearly. Otherwise, she'll be hurt."
"I know."
After hanging up, Connor furrowed his brow, staring down at his smartwatch.
Sensing his mood, Killian asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Connor shook his head.
He remembered his mother telling him that she wasn't comfortable with Sylvia, forcing him to choose between the two of them.
Connor had felt utterly miserable back then. He simply didn't understand how Sylvia had offended his mother.
But now, even though he couldn't spend the day with his mom, Sylvia was the one urging him to explain things so his mom wouldn't be sad.
Sylvia was so nice. Why couldn't his mom just like her?
If his mom wasn't so incredibly petty, he could go out and have fun with his mom, his dad, and Sylvia all together.
Everyone he liked would be right there with him. Wouldn't that be great?
Connor looked out the window.
*Mom, if only you could just be a little more reasonable.*
"Dad, pull over for a second. I still want to buy Professor Xavier a gift."
Killian's long, elegant fingers gripped the steering wheel. His profile was sharp and striking, a faint, calm serenity resting in his eyes, and a slight smirk played on his thin lips.
"Are you afraid he won't like you if you don't bring a gift?"
"Yeah!"
The kitchen was engulfed in smoke.
Because it was a luxury apartment complex, building management showed up almost immediately.
Jillian explained the situation, and the staff reminded her to be more careful in the future.
Once they left, Jillian still felt a lingering flutter of panic in her chest.
She clutched her heart and sat down at the dining table. The food had already gone cold.
Harsh, pale sunlight spilled through the window, stripping the vibrant dishes of their color and appeal.
Jillian had completely lost her appetite.
She sat at the table for a long time before she finally pulled herself together.
When she looked up, she saw Stella huddled in the corner, staring at her timidly.
Jillian stood up and made a simple kid's sandwich for Stella. She warmed up some milk, arranged a small fruit platter, and carried it all over to Stella's little dining table.
"Can you eat by yourself, Stella? I'm going to lie down for a bit. After you eat, you can play with your toys."
Jillian laid out all of Stella's favorite stuffed animals, building blocks, and puzzles.
