Stella spent most of her time locked in her own little world. Even with Jillian nearby, she rarely interacted with her.
Without uttering a single word, Stella sat obediently at the table, fastened her own bib, and picked up her fork and spoon.
Only then did Jillian feel comfortable enough to go rest.
Whenever her mood plummeted like this, she could feel her severe depression threatening to relapse. She quickly took her medication and lay down.
Under the effect of the pills, she drifted off to sleep.
She didn't know how much time had passed when she groggily felt movement near the edge of the bed. It felt like a small cat jumping onto the mattress.
But she remembered she didn't own a cat, or any pets for that matter.
In her half-asleep state, Jillian panicked, thinking an intruder had broken in. She snapped her eyes open, only to meet a pair of wide, dark, luminous eyes.
Seeing her wake up, Stella looked startled and quickly pulled her hand back.
Jillian propped herself up and realized that Stella had arranged all of her snacks in a perfect circle on the blanket over Jillian's chest.
"Stella, what are you doing?" Jillian asked softly.
Stella just stared back with wide eyes, saying nothing.
A moment later, she picked up her absolute favorite lollipop and offered it to Jillian.
Jillian hesitated for a second before it suddenly clicked.
Stella had seen her lying in bed and assumed she was sick.
So she brought out all of her snacks, because in her past, adults would finally let her eat snacks whenever she fell ill.
In her innocent mind, eating snacks was the cure for sickness.
She was giving up all her treats so Jillian would get better.
Jillian stared blankly, a lump forming in her throat as she suddenly recalled when Connor had done the exact same thing.
He was only a year old back then, having just learned how to walk.
Jillian's chest felt a little lighter. She consoled herself with the thought that Connor probably was genuinely busy.
He had recently started taking extracurricular classes. In Killian's social circle, kids his age had to learn a staggering amount of skills every single day.
English, chess, equestrianism, comprehensive brain development—the list was endless.
After getting out of bed, Jillian bought a voucher on her phone and took Stella to a children's baking class.
Mallory called to check in on how Stella was doing.
Jillian gave her a brief update and mentioned she was taking Stella to a baking class that afternoon to help her interact with kids her age and get her hands messy.
Mallory sounded full of admiration. "Jillian, whoever gets to be your child has practically hit the lottery."
"Stop flattering me, I haven't even done much."
Jillian smiled, though the thought of Connor made her feel like she was failing miserably at being a mother.
